ā€œDid I love as hard as I could?ā€

Is the question that I’ve been reflecting on recently. As I start to wrap my time up in Sun City, it’s hard to not look back and see all the lessons I’ve learned. And yea. I think I’ve loved hard… almost too hard. Endless days of showing up for my Soldiers and co-workers. Shamelessly spending my money and time on my guys. This past year, I translated this to the local community where I tried to show up for my friends at the markets, galleries, runs, games, shows, and more. I supported local businesses, from merch, to meals to endless cafecitos. I’ve showed up for my friends not even in this state- traveling to Alaska, Colorado, Washington, California, and so many more places. Loving hard meant that there were harder friendship heartbreaks (at least from my end lol), but I don’t regret a single thing. I move on and say yes to the people who KEEP saying yes to me. Who won’t see me as a threat or a competition. Who will love me in the good and bad.

This was the first time in my life where I also learned to love myself hard. Showing myself grace (haha funny ya that’s my name). Despite my workaholic tendencies in the first two years, I learned to love the job and commit myself to it. This past year, I learned to love myself by prioritizing my energy to the people who love me and to the hobbies that make me happy. I’ve learned who I am at the core- a hard working, creative individual who genuinely loves people and will show up for you. Will be your ride or die! Thank God for my therapist lol. Thank God for my growth and the growing pains. taken in Seward Highway by @grassaygim

ā€œBecause unfortunately we are going down a path of (with work ethic) tunnel vision and sometimes you neglect what is more important around youā€

Had some time to reflect about year 25 while working today and year 25 was… insert *chaotic screaming* LOL

This year, I learned a lot. But here are the biggest takeaways:
- How to fight for myself and those around me; choosing courage over fear
- Learning that boundaries are important… still learning how to actually set them
- Prioritizing my health over anything else- Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual
- Learning to let go, not everything has to be perfect, inspiring my last minute marathon and ultramarathon (a lil extreme)
- Leaning into the bad, prioritizing on how to recover from it

The biggest takeaway this year was understanding that being a workaholic doesn’t equal having a good work ethic. It’s an easy trap to fall into as a single mid-20s employee to give up your whole life for work. Most of year 25 was me feeling like a corpse as I worked my bones off. It definitely gave results and I think it was needed for the situation I was in, but at the expense of my personal life. My health and fitness was at an all time low, routine things such as checking my finances, car appointments were out the window, anger and short temper took over my life, and surviving was the only life goal I had.

After my first marathon in October, I promised myself that no matter what happens (even while being deployed), I will work towards my goals, whether it be personal, fitness, professional, etc. It’s been super chaotic and busy but I’m truly privileged and blessed to be chasing after these
goals… and to have goals to chase… AND to be surrounded by people who support me in chasing them!

Looking to year 26, I will keep chasing these goals… But I look to prioritize being in the Word and living out Romans 12:2. I look to continue to heal through being consistent with my therapy sessions. I look to spending more time with my family. I look to be better at responding to text messages lol. I look to live in the moment and enjoy every second of it, despite the bad and ugly at times. Cheers to another year! Praise God. taken in Horizon City, Texas by @grassaygim

This year, processing grief was different from any other year. I did normal tasks- grocery shopping, meal prepping, going on a run at the hottest time of the day (very me coded), facetiming friends, seeing people face to face, laundry, etc.

What was once a week where I couldnt do anything- not even face people, became just another week of going to work, socializing with people, and doing normal things. I know grief doesnt go away but finally after 12 years I’m learning to live with it, not letting it debilitate me.

I think a part of me always thought I had to grieve hard during this week. But Im realizing that that’s probably not what my friends would want for me. They would want me to keep doing what I’ve been doing. Cheers to healthy grieving and not feeling guilty about it. taken in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado by @grassaygim

Grateful for this rotation- it tested my platoon’s abilites and expertise and my guys absolutely crushed it. It helped me to actually grow confidence in myself and realize ā€œhey maybe im decent at this.ā€ Getting to actually do your job with a lot of maneuver space is always fun. So proud of the boys and gals for their hard work and the growth we had together. taken in Fort Irwin, California by @grassaygim

so far in 2025, ive learned that one of the roots that my anxiety stems from is my own internalized pressure to be perfect. I think my Korean culture plays a part in this as our society is centered around excellence and perfection. One of my earliest memory of childhood was when I was recognized for having the second/ third highest overall average for my midterms and finals in the FIRST AND SECOND GRADE. It was a tradition that the parents of the first, second, and third place students for these exams threw an end of the year party for the whole grade. Looking back, it was almost mocking the other kids, ā€œha look at us were better than youā€

Since then, I’ve been competing against a perfect version of myself. A version of myself that can only be achieved in a perfect world, with no grace for myself. A world where everything has to go perfectly. We know that this world doesn’t exist as shit goes wrong all the time. But I guess until recently, I thought this was obtainable.

I found myself stressed out over things I couldn’t control. I found myself apologizing for things not going perfectly. I found myself doubting myself for not being perfect. I found myself not trusting others, even when they have been amazing and followed me through the swamps and trenches.

Here’s to giving it my all and striving for excellence without idolizing excellence and the workplace. Here’s to living up to my name and giving grace for not only others but also for myself. taken in La Jolla by @grassaygim

Noah Kahan in his song ā€œall my love,ā€ meets up with an old friend, who he hasn’t seen in years. Him and his friend reminisce about their old memories, and he tells his old friend that despite the distance/ disconnect they’ve experienced, there is no bad blood, only all his love.

Friendships drift- especially when you’re in a job that moves you every 18-36 months after you’ve settled down. Recently, I’ve been thinking about how I would react if I saw my friends who I’ve drifted from. Will I gasp and coward away from them like some ppl have when I’ve visited home? Or will I be able to imitate the love Noah Kahan illustrates in this song?

I hope that I will be like the latter, telling them they got all my love. For now, ehhh we’ll see- we’re still working on it taken in Monument Valley by @grassaygim

Spending my birthday and Christmas in sunny El Paso in the comfort of my apartment was a surprisingly healing experience. As someone who grew up spending these two days solely at church, both in the receiving / giving end, it was good to have these days to myself. This was the first time I’ve stayed home during these two days. After getting off of staff duty, I rotted on the couch, ordered Indian food and watched Gossip Girl like there was no tomorrow.

Although cheesy, part of me finds Gossip Girl healing. It’s a story of all these Upper East Side rich high schoolers struggling through different problems- starting from substance addiction to bankruptcy and money heist. Despite the Upper East siders having these struggles, most of them had comfort in knowing that they will never run out of money (unless ur dad used all of it). In the midst of all thees rich high schoolers, are the Humphreys from Brooklyn who are lower middle-class trying to fit in with this crowd. Being in a job/ position (esp as an officer) where I am surrounded by upper-middle class and even middle class folks can be tiring. I could never relate to the family vacations, trust funds, money from parents, big birthday presents, etc. Maybe it’s the fact that I feel like a Dan and Jenny Humphrey trying to fit in a world full of Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodens that makes me think of this as a comfort show. Maybe its the fact that I see a lot of resemblance between Rufus Humphrey and my parents that makes this even more healing.

Well, here’s to 25 years! Excited for more to come. Hope yall had a Merry Christmas :) taken in El Paso, Texas by @grassaygim

I’ve been listening to this song a lot recently because the 2 artists talk about embracing individuality in a world that encourages conformity. This specific verse talks about the societal pressure to be neutral & be silent about personal beliefs. He stresses the importance of fighting against the fear that holds us back from expressing ourselves and making a difference.

In the current situation and season I’m in, this song resonates deeply with me. It is so easy to want to back off & stop fighting. But I always remember why I signed up for my job & who I do all of this for. Gotta keep fighting the good fight. taken in Monument Valley by @grassaygim
