DAY RESOURCE CENTER (10390 Guilford Road, Suite A, Jessup MD): Grassroots operates a Day Resource Center at 10390 Guilford Road in Jessup that offers hot meals, a food pantry, a clothing pantry for adults, laundry, and showers. The DRC is open on Mondays & Wednesdays from 2pm to 6pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. The center operates largely with the support of volunteers and donations from the community and with the financial support of Howard County government. Everyone is welcome, no matter their circumstance.

Thank you so much to the families at Hammond Middle and Elementary schools who brought donations to Grassroots yesterday at the Great Hammond Picnic!

We received many wonderful gifts of non-perishable food and hygiene products to support the adults and children staying at our emergency shelter. We are so grateful for this amazing generosity from our community which is helping us meet the needs of the 89 individuals currently staying with us at Grassroots. Thank you so much to the faculty, staff and families at Hammond Elementary and Middle schools!

Grassroots was honored to attend the recent Howard County National Association of Counties (NACO) Awards ceremony! Howard County received 113 NACO achievement awards including one celebrating the Leola Dorsey Resource Center Expansion. Grassroots is proud to be a part of the Leola Dorsey Center, which houses the Day Resource Center.

The Leola Dorsey Resource Center is a co-located service hub supported by a multi-agency model, designed to help individuals experiencing homelessness meet their immediate basic needs during the day, while accessing services designed to facilitate a transition out of homelessness. Services available include access to housing opportunities, health services and employment supports in one coordinated location. Since the hiring of a dedicated Center Manager in July 2025, the program has improved service coordination, expanded partnerships, aligned schedules, and increased access basics needs such as showers, laundry, hot meals, food and clothing pantries, mail services and identity documentation, among other services. The Center serves as a crucial point of entry where residents can meet basic needs to reduce barriers and accelerate pathways to stability, promoting successful housing and self-sufficiency outcomes.

The Grassroots Day Resource Center is located at the Leola Dorsey Center and is open three days a week - Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. We offer hot meals, laundry, showers, food and adult clothing pantries, access to resources, case management and more. We are located a 10390 Guilford Road in Jessup.

Today is Maryland Veterans Suicide Prevention Day. For the first time, the state is observing this commemorative day as a time for reflection, recollection, and a pledge to support the military and veteran community. You're never alone, and Grassroots is here to support you 24 hours a day.

In 2023, 6,398 U.S. veterans died by suicide, averaging approximately 17.5 deaths per day according to the Department of Veterans Affairs' Veteran Suicide Data and Reporting metrics.

The purpose of Veterans Suicide Prevention Day is to:

• Remember Losses: Honor the memory of veterans and service members lost to suicide.
• Reduce Stigma: A commitment to destigmatizing mental health challenges and encouraging open conversations.
• Encourage Action: A pledge across the state to actively reach out, check on service members and veterans, and connect individuals with professional support.

Veterans, service members and their families can reach out to Grassroots for free 24 hours a day:

Thank you so much to Tech Road Seventh Day Adventist who answered our call for urgent support at the emergency shelter!

They donated 3 cases of pudding cups, 3 cases of Cup O' Noodles, 20 cases of Juice boxes, 4 cases of breakfast bars, 7 large boxes of Mac & Cheese cups, 6 large boxes of Pop-Tarts, 8 large jars of pasta sauce, 4 cases of chips, 2 boxes of fruit cups and 20 cases of cereal.

We were absolutely blown away by this tremendous donation and their generosity to help support us when supplies were running low at the emergency shelter. We are so lucky to have such amazing partners like Tech Road Seventh Day Adventist Church. Thank you so much to their clergy, staff, lay leaders and parishioners!

Even though life can be hard and you may not always feels strong, you are tougher than whatever life throws at you. And Grassroots is here to be right by your side anytime you need extra support.

You can access our free 24-hour crisis line at 410-531-6677 or call 988 with any kind of need, whether you are having a bad day, or are feeling sad, lonely, anxious, depressed or even suicidal. We are also here if you just feel you need someone to talk to. You can also receive support by texting or chatting 988.

In addition, you can walk in for free, 24 hours a day to our crisis center at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A. Our counselors are here to provide mental health and substance use support and to connect you to vital resources. The Mobile Crisis Team can also be accessed by calling 410-531-6677 - clinicians will respond to crises and conflicts in community settings like home or school.

It is always okay to ask for help. Grassroots will be here for you with free, 24/7 support.

Grassroots feels so fortunate to provide support to those in the community who contact or walk in to our crisis center in need of mental health, substance use, suicide prevention, housing or other support.

Through our FY26 Impact Survey, 99% of respondents let us know that they would use Grassroots services again if needed. This is due to the high level of services that are provided by our amazing counselors in helping those who are dealing with mental health, substance use, homelessness and food insecurity related crises. We are so grateful to the community for trusting Grassroots to provide necessary support.

Grassroots is here for you with free, 24-hour support via our hotline (410-531-6677), 988 (phone, chat or text) or walk-in counseling at our location at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A in Columbia. We provide free, 24-hour crisis intervention, mental health, substance use disorder, housing support, suicide prevention and other services and resources.

Individuals can receive phone, chat/text, walk-in or Mobile Crisis Team support with a variety of situations, including: psychiatric crises like depression, isolation, anxiety or suicidal ideation; drug use or withdrawal; homelessness; access to necessary assistance like food and hygiene items; connection to resources or treatment, and more.

Thank you so much to Our Lady of the Chesapeake for their generous donation to our emergency shelter!

Grassroots was able to make the connection with this wonderful church through our Sr. Director of Operations Nancy Campbell (pictured left) who teaches religious education for the community. She connected with Michaela (pictured right) who runs the children's programs, and she worked with the Vacation Bible School program to adopt Grassroots. The many wonderful families and children, including Michaela's daughter Sadie (pictured middle), brought in so many amazing gifts, including non-perishable food, hygiene products and baby items for us!

Michaela shared: "The OLC community is very generous so we wanted to share our blessings with the greater community. We love Miss Nancy and support her life changing work at Grassroots!"

Members of our military and their families face unique mental health challenges like deployment stress, frequent moves, family separation and reintegration issues resulting in anxiety, depression, substance use, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and family strain.

Grassroots provides free, 24-hour crisis, mental health and substance use support to service members, veterans, spouses and their families throughout Maryland to help deal with these distinct issues. Military personnel can access immediate, compassionate and confidential care to meet their specialized needs. No matter why type of issue you might be dealing with, Grassroots is here to ensure you don’t have to do it alone.
