(Video speed increased at 1.5x which is my “I Wish I Could Tempo” just for the hell of it.
John Coltrane’s 26-2 is a challenge within itself, but trying to play it on the clarinet at my skill set level is unproductive at best. So I did it unattached to any kind of results for the moment.
All of this just bc I am always inspired by the clarinetists I hear on Instagram.

John Coltrane’s composition 26-2 got me on a serious lockdown.
Despite the challenges of trying to learn it, I used this process for today’s session.
Listen. Prior to today, I have checked a lot of recordings.
Long Tones: Chord Progression: Guide Tones
Technique: Play all scales/ arpeggios of progression
Improvisation: Use melody as a guide
Piano: play chord progressions
Etude: write out something that helps to hear the changes.

I just ‘wanna’ jump in on the “Celebration of John Coltrane”.
This clip is from a gig in 2016/17 with me and and very special group of young musicians (ages 18-21) performing Giant Steps in our own special way.
Stephanie Phillips, Charles Garrett (drums)
Brad Cannata (bass)

Since it’s the month of nostalgia, I was thinking about the day my mom and I went to get my first saxophone. As soon as I got home, I went to my room locked the door and had a blast trying to play along with Parliament Funkadelic Live. Better yet, when I saw how my dad reacted to Jimmy Brown play the trumpet, sax, and, flute, I figured out a way to avoid some good old fashion ass whoopin as young kid.

I can’t wait to get on the trails but there’s this rattle snake that lives rent free in my mind. by @graymayfieldsax

Trying to hang with Lee Morgan as much as possible. It’s hard to believe that he was only 19 when he recorded this solo.
Composition: Blue Train by John Coltrane
Trumpet solo: Lee Morgan

After many sessions of isolating on the most difficult phrases (changing rhythms, practicing backwards, …,) I realized the greatest challenge was just being relaxed. I just put the metronome on 60 and started going through the whole piece. I was able to just rehearse the etude and focus on how to shape each phrase for the next time. Desire is something else but observation of it is everything.

Clocking in with all the musicians on IG sharing ideas, patterns, solos, and just getting it together.
Always Inspired!!

Trumpet solo ( 2nd chorus, measures 1-6) by Lee Morgan from John Coltrane’s recording of Blue Trane.
