For this piece I wanted to create a soft, felt-like material using @maxon Cinema 4D. I really like the result. It took a lot of experimentation but you can definitely see all the little fibers that make up the fabric. The scene was built in C4D and lit and rendered using Redshift. A few simple animations of a Canon AT-1 35mm film camera. HD version is on my website, link in bio.

One of the biggest hurdles for me as a 3D artist has been learning how to think like a photographer and apply all of the technical concepts to improve my work. Thankfully, my wife @megankmendenhall is an amazing professional photographer and I have learned so much from her over the years about lighting, focal lengths, etc.

The camera model and textures were downloaded from CGTrader. The studio and lighting setup was built inside Cinema 4D. The shots were animated in C4D and rendered using Redshift. “Porsche GT3”

Since September 2023 I have devoted most of my spare time learning to produce animation using @unrealengine. This piece represents the totality of my Unreal learning journey so far. It’s an homage to technology, beautifully-engineered cars, and the spirit of auto-racing that I grew up around as a kid in Charlotte, NC. The warehouse hideout environment was created using assets from Quixel and Polyhaven. The music is a glitchy, hip-hop style track I produced to complement the bouncy energy and unique shapes of the Porsche 911 GT3. The shots were graded in After Effects and edited together in Premiere Pro. Full 4K version on my website.

“Enchanted Forest.”

I’m really enjoying learning to create art and animation with Unreal Engine. The filmic quality of the renders is mind-blowing. And the software is deceptively easy to use. I built a custom tool that procedurally generates this entire forest with Quixel Megascans assets and automatically cuts paths through it using splines. Can’t wait to tackle more projects!

I composed the score using the iOS synth apps Groovebox, AUM, and Cubasis.

“Secret Temple”

My first fully rendered piece using Unreal Engine. I was very impressed with the tools and how easy it was to build a convincing and cinematic environment in just a few hours. Being able to access the Quixel Megascans collection is incredible and really opens up a lot of possibilities.

The piece itself was inspired by memories of exploring the woods around my neighborhood as a kid with my brother in the late-1980s. I wanted to portray a secret doorway to a forest temple like something from “The Legend of Zelda,” which we played a ton together.

I composed the score using the iOS synth apps Groovebox, AUM, and Cubasis.
