If you’re new here, Hi! This is a little bit about why I decided to start this account. Actually, this is a fairly new account. Something you may not know is that my first one of over 18 years got compromised and deleted. During that time, I spent time in prayer, asking God what my “niche” was. I tried a lot of content over the years and all of it fell on deaf ears for the most part. Until I started sharing my journey to gray 19 months ago. I’ve purposely kept my follower count low. I’m not here to just gain followers. I want to follow real accounts. Women who say… if she can do it, maybe I can, too. So I’ll continue to grow this account with intention. Slowly, over time. Thank you so much for engaging with my content. I appreciate you. I may not make “polished” reels, but it’s just me showing up and posting anyway. 🩶 #grayhairmovement #grayhair #silversisters #grayhairtransition #grayhairdontcare by @graywithsarah

I know that it seems like the first year of a gray growout is slow. Especially when you choose to just stop dyeing your hair and let the gray grow in (otherwise known as a cold turkey gray hair grow out) but I’ve been on this journey for 17 months now. I CAN tell you… it DOES get better. And you can do it! 🩶 #silversisters #grayhair #grayhairtransition #grayhairmovement #grayhairgrowout by @graywithsarah

I feel like this needs to be said more than once. It’s easy to assume why a woman chose to grow out her gray. Maybe you assume it’s to follow a trend, or movement. You may comment, “DYE IT, IT’S AWFUL” thinking that you’re being helpful (or maybe you’re just a troll, whatever)… before you comment these *so awesome* responses (note my sarcasm here), please consider this, here’s part of my story to gray: I dyed my hair for over 20 years. And each time, no matter the type of dye (permanent, semipermanent, or henna dye) I burned my scalp. In my 20’s and even my early 30’s, I didn’t give a crap. I so desperately wanted to fit in with society. As time went on, not only did I burn my scalp, but I developed sores on my forehead from hair dye. My hair was incredibly unhealthy and so was my scalp. And in my 40’s, I reached my breaking point with hair dye. My mom died in May 2024. 8 months later, in January 2025, I let go of my dye. I was tired and exhausted. I knew it was time. Not to follow a “trend” or a movement. But because my hair and scalp needed it. Now 16 months later, I’m still shining with my silvers. In the process, I’ve “met” many amazing Silver Sisters here doing the same. I don’t apologize for my gray, even if it’s not acceptable in society or by the hair dye industry. I ditched my dye and found freedom. #silversisters #grayhair #grayhairdontcare #grayhairgrowout #grayhairtransition by @graywithsarah

I understand hating your gray hair. I hated mine. So much so that I covered it for over 20 years. I was determined that no one would EVER see it. I grew up thinking it ages women. My mom told me it was unmanageable. Wiry. And that no matter what, I had to just keep it covered. I was a “never let anyone know” type of person. I’d feel the anxiety over my roots showing. So every 6-8 weeks, I dyed my hair. But something changed when I was 41. Just 8 months after losing my mom, I was exhausted with dyeing my hair. I got to a point where burning my hair and scalp and being told that “pain is beauty” was no longer a good time. I threw away my box dye, and my hair dyeing clothes. And I didn’t look back. And the thing is… I don’t even miss myself with hair dye. I KNOW what it feels like to hate gray. I know the anxiety. But, I’ve also experienced the freedom and joy that comes with learning to love my gray hair. Something I thought I’d never do. If your story is like mine, follow along! I’m now almost 2 years dye free and I love it 😍 #greyhair #silverhair #grayhair #grayhairdontcare #grayhairjourney by @graywithsarah

I never thought I’d be using social media to share my cold turkey gray hair growout. I honestly started posting just to keep track of my journey for myself. But I’m really happy that ladies are enjoying following along. I used to struggle to make content and I never knew that God would use my gray hair, something I hated for SO many years, and that it would be the “thing” that a bunch of ladies related to. If you are not happy with your hair dye, and especially if it’s hurting you, I’m just here to let you know that letting your dye go is an option. Heck, you may love your gray hair and all the freedom! #silversisters #grayhair #silverhair #grayonpurpose #greyhairmovement by @graywithsarah

I spent decades hiding the very thing I now think is beautiful. 🤍

I was wrong about gray hair… I really love it now. If you are thinking about growing out your gray but you’re apprehensive because you think you’ll hate it, just give it a shot. Because you may end up being like me and love it! #silversisters #greyhair #grayhairmovement #grayhairtransition #grayhairdontcare by @graywithsarah

When everyone has an opinion about something these days, you may as well do something that will make them say “woah, you’re going gray” then you can be like “heck ya! And it’s amazing!” 🩶 You’ll be told many things in the beginning. But the freedom you’ll feel outweighs the opinions. Anyway, you know what they say about opinions 🤣 #grayhair #grayhairdontcare #grayhairjourney #silversisters #silverhair by @graywithsarah

My mom always told me that if you wait for the right time to do something, you’ll never do it. But I’ll tell you this, gray hair looks amazing in the fall and winter 😉🩶#silversisters #grayhair #grayhairmovement #grayhairtransition #grayhairdontcare by @graywithsarah

I wish my mom could see me now. She LOVED her hair dye until the end of her life. That’s one reason I’ll never tell a woman to give it up if she loves it. But I know my momma would be proud of me and seeing my growout. So this post is for her. And it’s for every woman who is considering embracing gray. To remember that our silver crowns are beautiful, and proof that we’re here no longer hiding something that is so beautiful. 🩶 #silversisters #grayhair #grayhairmovement #grayhairdontcare #grayhairtransition by @graywithsarah

I was told that I’d hate the awkward part of growing out my gray. I never did. Here’s why: each week that I saw my demarcation line (the line where your old hair dye and gray hair meet) as proof that something beautiful was happening. The old was fading and the new beautiful silver that I once hated, was growing in. I think it’s so important to show this perspective on a gray growout. Because there are Silver Sisters out there like me, who never minded it. Quite the opposite… we loved it. So, ya, I’m going to share about this. Because somewhere out there, a lady who is considering gray (or maybe just starting out) needs to hear this. If you’re considering gray, is having to eventually go through the awkward stage holding you back? Or if you’re a Silver Sister, did you hate the awkward stage, or did you love it?

The honest truth? I don’t miss dye. Not even a little bit. I wondered if I would at the beginning of my growout 21 months ago, but I never did. Instead, I felt relieved. I also didn’t have anxiety anymore about my roots showing. So… nope. I still don’t miss my dye, and I’m way happier without it now. Literally one of the best things I did for myself. What about you ladies, if you’re on this journey? Do you miss your dye? And if you’re not on this journey yet, are you worried you might miss it?

It’s simple: Grow out your gray if YOU want to. Ignore the haters. If you’re ready (or heck, do it scared if you want) go for it! People may doubt you. THEY may hate it. THEY may tell you that you gotta dye it back. There’s so much that they will say. But when that freedom comes, and you start to see your beautiful gray hair pattern, let me tell you, it’s worth it. People online ask if I’m going back to dye, and my answer is always heck no! I went from growing up and hating gray hair to loving gray hair in these last 20 months. So, when are you going to start on your journey? Or if you have, how many months in are you? #grayhair #silversisters #grayhairmovement #grayhairdontcare #grayhairjourney by @graywithsarah
