And now it is time for one of Mark's 'Seven Panels You Must See at the Grand Rapids Comic-Con".

Back in the mid-1970's, George Lucas was working on his epic film Star Wars: Episode IV--A New Hope, but much of the technology for the special effects did not exist in that time. So what is a young, inspired film maker to do? Easy: do it himself! George took a few people he knew that had skill in special effects and they went to work with model kits and even a couple trips to a city dump to find items that would give the crew inspiration to create this universe.

Roger Christian was one of those few people. In the process of brainstorming while using a refuse dump as inspiration, he created three of the most iconic aspects of Star Wars that are all an integral part of that universe to this very day: the lightsaber, R2-D2, and the Millennium Falcon. The lightsaber and R2-D2 were inspired by items other people literally threw away, while the Millennium Falcon from where I once read was a collaboration of various model kits: apparently there are a few pieces from a 1957 Chevy model in there somewhere. Roger is attending our show for one day only and has graciously agreed to share the process of how these items went from idea to finished product.

This should be a fascinating look at an aspect of this revolutionary film: how these iconic props became real. This is an absolute must attend for any Star Wars fanatic, plus any inspiring film maker, special effects junkie, or any wannabe inventor will find some interesting facts and tidbits of inspiration. Get a book signed while are at it.

"The Creation Of Star Wars...From A Dump" will be held on Saturday at 11:30 am in Ballroom C. by @grcomiccon
