(Slides 1-3) my final project “Suitable for Daily Wear” for my art and the Anthropocene class, composed of sewn bioleather panels with food waste (coffee grounds, eggshells, tangerine peels) I collected over a month for texture/color

(Slides 4-5) messing around and experimenting with bioplastic I made

My final for class addresses the effects of large-scale waste systems and mass consumption by incorporating both fashion and food – two of the most waste-intensive industries. I also wanted to focus on the environmental impacts of leather production and highlight the disturbing nature of exploiting animals for the sake of high fashion. The patchwork style is to show how cow bodies are cut into standardized units; the stitching is to mimic butcher cuts. It’s intentionally uncomfortable to wear for more than a few minutes and move around in (it also smells weird😢) in order to allude to the facade of comfort that masks mass waste repercussions. BUT biotextiles have several promising (and more comfortable) applications in the future of fashion and forefront a more conscious relationship with both the environment and what we wear. Sustainable innovation is so exciting! Biodesign is the future
