Nikolai Valuev is one of the most physically imposing figures to have competed in professional heavyweight boxing. Standing at approximately 7ft tall and weighing around 150kg during his boxing career, the Russian former world champion earned the nickname “The Beast from the East” because of his extraordinary size.

Valuev became the WBA heavyweight world champion in 2005 and successfully defended his title several times before losing it to Ruslan Chagaev in 2007. He later reclaimed the championship in 2008, defeating John Ruiz, before eventually retiring from professional boxing in 2009.

Following his boxing career, Valuev entered politics in Russia and became a member of the State Duma. His transition from heavyweight champion to politician has made him a particularly distinctive figure, with his enormous stature continuing to attract attention wherever he appears.

London Underground passengers have been increasingly discussing how noisy the Tube has become, with complaints about screeching trains, loud announcements and the general noise of busy stations. The concerns have sparked calls for a closer look at noise levels across the network and how they affect commuters.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

Noise on the Underground can vary significantly depending on the line, train type, track conditions and station design. The sharp squealing heard on some curves is often linked to friction between train wheels and rails, while ventilation systems, announcements and crowds add to the overall sound.

Calls for a full investigation are now being highlighted online, although the image alone does not establish whether an official investigation has been announced. Any confirmed review would need to identify the main sources of noise and assess whether improvements could make journeys quieter and more comfortable for passengers.

Ever wondered why one person in a relationship is always freezing while the other feels like they’re sitting in a sauna? It turns out this is a common issue among couples, particularly when it comes to sleeping temperatures. A survey published in August 2026 found that 70.2% of people who share a bed with their partner prefer a different temperature from them.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

Differences in body composition, metabolism, circulation and hormones can all influence how people experience heat and cold. This means two people can be in exactly the same room but feel completely different, with one reaching for extra blankets while the other is desperately searching for a fan.

The temperature battle can become even more noticeable at bedtime, when both partners are trying to get comfortable enough to sleep. Finding a compromise, using separate duvets or adjusting bedding to suit individual needs can help couples stay comfortable without constantly arguing over the heating.

A historic church in Lancashire was on the brink of closure after struggling to raise the £750,000 needed for urgent repairs, until its vicar made an astonishing discovery beneath the altar. Reverend Jane Lee and a fellow church member were preparing for what they feared could be their final Easter service at St Wilfrid’s Church in Melling when they discovered a hidden box containing nine gold coins. The unexpected find gave the small congregation fresh hope of saving their centuries-old place of worship.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

The coins were 1999 gold Britannias produced by the Royal Mint and came with a handwritten note dated July 2022, signed by someone calling themselves “James, servant of the living God”. The anonymous donor had specifically requested that the coins be given to the church, but the gift had remained undiscovered for years. When the coins were sold, they raised just under £30,000, leaving the vicar and her colleague overwhelmed by the timing of the discovery.

Although the money does not cover the full repair bill, church leaders hope it will provide the foundation for further fundraising and grant applications to restore the historic building. The discovery has also attracted renewed community support, giving the congregation hope that St Wilfrid’s can remain open for future generations. What began as a desperate struggle to keep the church alive has turned into an extraordinary story of generosity, faith and unexpected good fortune.

The University of Exeter has been awarded £939,434 by Natural England to help protect some of Britain’s most vulnerable shark species. The three-year project will focus on blue sharks, porbeagle sharks and tope sharks, with researchers aiming to better understand their populations and the threats they face in English waters.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

Scientists will use 75 electronic tags to track the sharks’ movements, migration routes and behaviour. They will also use specialist technology to identify pregnant sharks and locate potential breeding grounds, helping researchers understand where these animals need the most protection.

The project will run until March 2029, with findings expected to help improve conservation efforts and guide future decisions on protecting Britain’s marine wildlife. Researchers hope the work will provide vital information to safeguard these often misunderstood predators for future generations.

A British court has ruled that it is currently impossible to determine which of two identical twin brothers fathered a child after both men had sex with the same woman within four days of each other during the month she conceived. DNA testing confirmed that one of the twins was the biological father, but because identical twins share almost identical genetic profiles, the tests could not distinguish between them. The unusual case reached the Court of Appeal after a dispute over who should legally be recognised as the child’s father.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

The child’s mother and the twin who was not named on the birth certificate challenged the previous decision, seeking to change the legal arrangements. The judges concluded that there was an equal 50% chance of either brother being the biological father, meaning neither could be conclusively identified using the available evidence. The court also stressed that failing to prove one twin was the father did not automatically prove that he was not the father.

The ruling highlights a rare but genuine limitation of modern DNA testing. Although scientists can usually establish biological paternity with extremely high confidence, standard tests may not distinguish between identical twins because their DNA is so similar. Researchers believe more advanced genetic analysis could potentially resolve cases like this in the future, but such testing can be extremely expensive. For now, the child’s biological father remains uncertain, leaving the family and courts facing a complicated question of legal parenthood.

Scotland is being highlighted as a destination for people looking to escape the pressures of everyday life, reconnect with nature and find a little more peace. The claim that 97% of people are just one trip away from “inner peace” is a catchy headline, but it should be treated cautiously: I couldn’t verify that exact statistic in reliable research. However, a National Trust for Scotland survey found that 97% of Scots believe access to the outdoors is important for their mental health.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

From the dramatic Highlands and peaceful lochs to historic towns, quiet woodland walks and breathtaking coastlines, Scotland offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and take a break from busy routines. Getting outdoors can help people feel less stressed, and spending time surrounded by nature gives many visitors a chance to switch off from work, social media and the constant demands of daily life.

Whether it’s a weekend exploring the countryside, a road trip through the Highlands or simply a quiet walk beside a loch, sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what people need. A trip won’t magically solve every problem, but taking time away from everyday pressures and enjoying the natural world can be a valuable way to recharge and return home feeling refreshed.

New figures show that more than 90% of reported burglaries in England and Wales did not result in a charge or summons in the year ending March 2026. The latest Home Office statistics show that 5.0% of residential burglary offences resulted in a charge, while 72.4% were closed because no suspect had been identified.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

When other outcomes and cases still awaiting an outcome are included, the overall figure can reach around 93% of burglaries not resulting in a charge or summons, which is where the headline figure of 92% comes from. The situation has attracted renewed criticism over whether police have enough time and resources to properly investigate high-volume crimes such as burglary.

There is also some positive context: burglary itself has fallen substantially over the past decade. The latest Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated 327,000 domestic burglary incidents in the year ending December 2025, a 22% fall from the previous year. However, the low proportion of cases leading to charges remains a major concern for victims and continues to raise questions about how effectively reported burglaries are being investigated.

This incredible landscape is Giethoorn in the Netherlands, where homes are built on small strips and islands of land surrounded by canals. The unusual layout dates back centuries to peat extraction, which left behind a network of waterways and narrow pieces of land where houses were built.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

Rather than traditional roads, many parts of Giethoorn are connected by footbridges and waterways, with residents and visitors using boats, bicycles and walking paths to get around. Some of the homes are effectively on their own little islands, giving the village its famous appearance and earning it the nickname “Dutch Venice.”

It isn’t completely cut off from the outside world, though. Giethoorn is a real, functioning village where people live permanently, and its unusual canals are the result of the area’s history rather than a modern architectural experiment. The wider Dutch region also contains several other villages surrounded by waterways, including Broek in Waterland and Watergang.

A grandfather has gone viral after turning a trip to the hospital into a full-on occasion, arriving in a sharp powder-blue suit, matching hat and even carrying balloons to meet his newborn grandson for the first time. The man, identified as Matthew Lemme, explained that he wanted to make a good first impression on his grandson, joking that if meeting your grandson isn’t a reason to wear a suit, then what is?

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

The heartwarming moment quickly spread across social media, with viewers praising him for making such an important family milestone feel even more special. After arriving at the hospital dressed in his best, Matthew was photographed holding his newborn grandson, creating the memorable first meeting he had clearly hoped for.

While the baby obviously won’t remember his grandfather’s outfit, the photograph is likely to become one of those family memories that gets looked back on for years. Sometimes it’s the small gestures, like dressing up for someone who has only just entered the world, that make a moment unforgettable.

Pierre Coffin, the French animator and co-creator of the Minions, really did explain why the characters were originally portrayed as male. In a 2015 interview, he was asked why there were no female Minions and joked that, because of how “dumb and stupid” they were, he simply couldn’t imagine them as girls. The quote used in the viral post is therefore based on something he actually said.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

Coffin, who also provides the voices of the Minions, has since given a more detailed explanation of the characters. In a 2026 interview, he said the idea of female Minions had actually been explored, including a concept involving a separate group that were apparently female, but it was never developed. He also said that, in his mind, female Minions would look exactly the same as the male ones.

As for the even bigger mystery of how Minions reproduce, Coffin has a surprisingly simple answer: they don’t. He has described them as creatures that simply “are”, meaning the franchise intentionally leaves much of their origins and biology unexplained. So while the viral poster makes the original comment sound like a serious explanation, it was essentially Coffin joking about the characters’ ridiculous and mischievous personalities.

Lewis Hamilton’s journey to Formula 1 was built on years of sacrifice from his father, Anthony Hamilton. The family did not come from a wealthy background, and Anthony worked multiple jobs at the same time to help pay for Lewis’s karting, travelling and racing costs as his son pursued his dream of becoming a professional driver.

Follow (us) @GreatBritishBlogs for more NEWS updates like this 🗞️

At various points, Anthony worked three jobs, including putting up estate-agent signs, washing dishes and selling double glazing, while also travelling with Lewis to races around the country. The costs quickly added up, and Anthony has spoken about how difficult it was financially, with the family even relying heavily on credit to keep Lewis competing.

That commitment eventually paid off. Lewis went from racing karts as a young boy to joining McLaren’s driver development programme and ultimately becoming one of Formula 1’s most successful drivers. Hamilton has repeatedly credited his father’s determination and sacrifices as a major reason he was able to reach the highest level of motorsport.
