We invite you to arrive early and make a lantern, which will be lit at sundown and become part of a procession through the garden. Great Small Works and Fihi Ma Fihi's 9/19 SPAGHETTI KAREVAN: Artist Spotlight: THE LEGENDARY CYPHERS! New York City’s Hip-Hop masters, who have gathered in Union Square Park since 2013. Initially a group of friends who came together for a one-time event, the way people expressed themselves sparked the idea to create a weekly cypher, which now happens every Friday night from May to November. Theirs is a movement that showcases the raw, authentic, unscripted rap freestyle experience, involving rappers, beatboxers, musicians, singers and everyone else! The cypher is open to everyone, no matter the skill level. Great Small Works and Fihi Ma Fihi's 9/19 SPAGHETTI KAREVAN: Artist Spotlight: GABE PACHECO! Gabe Pacheco, originally from Washington, DC, is an actor, comedian, host, friend, and roving academic, a bilingual performer with progressive leanings, animated, literate, and with a touch of sly post-Millennium wit. No one gyrates their hips better to the notion of the world crumbling around us, and no one better evokes the spirit of norteño music with the message of early-80’s DC hardcore. It’s comedy that is steeped in the present, while hoping for a less ridiculous future. Gabe has trained at the UCB Theater in NYC and is a veteran in the Story Pirates Acting Company, preparing him for his starring role in the short film “Leaves in Autumn”, which was screened at the Anthology Film Archives (NYC) as part of the New Filmmakers Festival in 2018. Yousef Tehrani is a singer and instrumentalist specializing in Iranian classical and traditional music. His first instrument was the tonbak (goblet drum), which he studied with Mohammad-Reza Lotfi and Arash Farhangfar. He later studied singing, primarily with Mehdi Layegh. He has been performing professionally for over 20 years. He will be joined by musicians Amin Sarshar and Hedayat Shafeei. Great Small Works and Fihi Ma Fihi's 9/19 SPAGHETTI KAREVAN: Artist Spotlight: THE BROOKLYN NOMADS! The Brooklyn Nomads are a cross-cultural musical ensemble rooted in Arabic music traditions. They blend diverse musical backgrounds, including Arab, Turkish, Iranian, classical, bluegrass, and jazz, to create a unique sound. The group is known for their contemporary interpretations of traditional Arabic repertoire and their innovative compositions, incorporating a wide range of instruments and vocal styles. They are also involved in social justice initiatives, particularly around Palestine, and have collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, and performed at TED, the Kennedy Center, and Le Poisson Rouge. What does home mean when you live between cultures? The Brooklyn Nomads began as a response to that question. Founded by brothers Hadi Eldebek and Mohamad Eldebek, the ensemble grew from their desire to tell their own stories and create a space where they—and others navigating multiple cultures and identities—could feel seen, connected, and at home. Great Small Works and Fihi Ma Fihi's 9/19 SPAGHETTI KAREVAN: Artist Spotlight! Karevan host Aareeyan of Fihi Ma Fihi Worlds: The international collective SoU (Sounds of the Unseen) was formed in 2020 during COVID while Aareeyan was in Dubai with a number of his friends between Bangladesh, the US (NYC, DC, Miami) and Canada. It has since grown among a variety of artists hailing from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. It came from a process facilitated by Aareeyan through intentional conversation, identifying a shared emotional theme in the collective, beginning to explore creative inspirations that ultimately leads to a song, across boundaries and languages.
