Jenny McCarty (from @sage_leaf_studio) was good at science and good at art, and for years, she went all in on her water resource management career until she hit a wall with burnout and had to reconnect with the art practice she loved: painting.

I recognized a lot of my own journey in what she was describing. Jenny happily chose a science degree and career, and doesn't have any regrets, but she shed light on what our generation was told about people in creative fields.

Turns out the "disorganized, can't run a business" artist stereotype says more about what art school doesn't teach than what artists are actually capable of.

A new episode of @reconnect.pod is live with the incredible wildlife watercolor artist and ecologist, Jenny McCarty @sage_leaf_studio 💜

She grew up painting with acrylics and oils, both made from petroleum, until her water resources day job forced her to look at what was actually going down her sink.

Listen to the full episode to learn more about her journey and what she uncovered - on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube 👀🎙️

🔗 FREE: Jenny also put together a free guide on what to ask an artist about sustainable practices, covering materials, packaging, and shipping. The link is in her bio.

Quartz countertops were recently banned in Australia. Here's why, straight from our conversation with interior designer Alex Shield.

Quartz contains silica - a fine, sand-like dust that causes silicosis, a serious lung disease, when inhaled. It's the workers cutting these countertops who are most exposed, often without proper protective equipment. It's not something we see as consumers, but it's happening throughout the supply chain.

Sustainability isn't only about what's in your home. It's about the people who made it.

"Sustainable design equals expensive" is the assumption Alex Shield says she runs into more than almost anything else. She told us it's just not true.

In this clip, she breaks down what sustainable design actually means: durability, not price tags. Reupholstering a piece that's been in your family for generations instead of buying new. Choosing tile with recycled content at the exact same price as the standard option. Investing in one handcrafted piece built to last instead of replacing a cheap one every few years.

The real question isn't whether you can afford sustainable design. It's where you choose to invest, and where you choose to save.

What does the world you want to live in actually look like? That's the question we close every episode of (re)connect with, and we LOVED Alex Shield's answer.

For her, it starts with slowing down: growing her own food, repairing instead of replacing, building real community around her. She told us about a mall in Sweden that only sells pre-loved goods - vintage, thrifted, repaired on-site instead of thrown away. Her wish is simple: more of that, everywhere.

It's a quiet vision. It's also a real departure from how most of us shop today.

What would your answer be? Full episode with Alex Shield, founder of Alex Shield Design, live now - link in bio 🎙️

Weekly vlog while in Paris 🩵

Two weeks ago, I wanted to do something different and bring you into a busy week in my life. Lots of client calls, team catch ups, two podcast recordings for @reconnect.pod, a talk at @skema_bs and being a jury member as well. All whilst going through one of the most intense heatwaves of my life 🥵

Hope you liked this format! Let me know in the comments if you’d like to see more content like this.

I expected a quick 5‑minute Q&A after my talk at @skema_bs… and it turned into 20 minutes of some of the most thoughtful questions I’ve had in a long time.

I was invited to speak with the MDDA Program (students already working in the field 3 weeks out of 4) so the conversation was *real*: what’s actually happening in social media right now, what’s changing fast, and what still matters when everything feels automated.

We talked about the reality of social media in 2026:
what builds community (for real), how to measure what matters, and where AI can support organic content.

Some of the questions that stuck with me:

→ Are brands replacing shoots with AI now?
→ Will culture research become “just prompting”?
→ Are we accelerating audience fatigue by producing more and more
→ Will people eventually tune out of ad-heavy platforms altogether?

Thank you, Associate Professor Zhenzhen Zhao, for the invitation - and for creating space for such an honest conversation. I’ll be back tomorrow as a jury member for the end-of-year projects.

If you’re teaching, running a program, or building a digital marketing curriculum and want a grounded, no-BS perspective (across nonprofits, wellness, and purpose-led brands), I’d love to connect.

In an era of information overload, everyone seems so clever that asking a basic question feels embarrassing.

Audrey's advice from 10 years inside a corporate greenwashing machine: take out a notebook, sit down with someone, and say: can you draw it for me?

"You need to understand what you do and why you do it. Until you do, keep asking."

Not a dumbass move. The only move.

We've been told the same narratives for so long that restarting from scratch feels overwhelming.

But Audrey flips it: working less, consuming less, unchaining yourself from the consumerist system, that's not sacrifice. That's a better life.

"Adapting doesn't mean we're going to be unhappy. It's the other way around."

And the new generation? She's not worried about them either.

"They connected the dots way before I did."

Can you answer these without hesitating?
What is this content actually for?

Who exactly is it speaking to?

How much can we realistically produce?
If not, you have a posting schedule. Not a strategy. Swipe to see what's missing.

What if the goal was to make yourself redundant?

That's the philosophy behind People for Nature's ambassador pathway. You come to a workshop. You learn. And if it resonates, you get trained to run it yourself.

"If I run a workshop to seven people and one of them does it again, you can see how quickly the impact multiplies."

Ten years working inside the clean-tech industry. Eight years of asking questions. And eventually, a thread she couldn't stop pulling.

This week on Reconnect, I sat down with Audrey Barucchi, co-founder and CEO of @peoplefornature.org.au, to talk about the moment she realised the company she'd given a decade of her life to was capitalising on climate fear, not solving it.

And what she chose to do next.

We also talked about:

- Growing up in the Southern Alps with no screens and a grandfather who told her stories about birds and clouds

- How motherhood gave her a multi-generational lens on nature stewardship

- Why she believes you're not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean

- Citizen COP and what it looks like to bring global climate action into your backyard

Audrey's "stubborn optimism" is the kind that's been stress-tested. This one left me with a lot to sit with.
