Someday, this album is how they’ll remember her 🤍⁣

At 16, this session with Sophie was a gift, and her family knew it. So we didn’t rush. We spent the evening at her favorite place, capturing who she is right now, every gray hair and burst of senior zoomies, and then I turned it all into a custom album designed by hand from her story. ⁣
⁣
Files get forgotten. An album gets pulled down, handed to guests, turned to on the hard days. It’s the thing they’ll hold onto long after she’s gone. ⁣

Forever grateful that Sophie is still here on this journey with me. She has seen it all, and just keeps living life with a smile on her face. Except this photo, she wanted to play in the water and I made her pose for twenty versions of this.

Plus, she and Cosmo are closer than ever. Good of her to impart her wisdom in her golden years.

Happy 8th wedding anniversary to my amazing wife, Elizabeth.

Over those eight years, we have consumed 4,761 matcha lattes. Exclaimed, “What, I’m not sleeping!” 1,228 times. And said, “While you’re up, will you go downstairs and get me water?” 2,830 times.

True story: as we were trying to figure out what to do to celebrate our 8th anniversary, we realized something. Every day is an adventure for us. We enjoy time together, explore new places, try new restaurants, and don’t save surprises for anniversaries and birthdays. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.

Love you, boo.

Sophie turns 16 today. I don’t know why it feels different than the others, but it does.

(Yes, we got her a Mercedes G Wagon. You know how Super Sweet 16 works.)

She’s been here for more than a third of my life. She’s been through moves to Colorado and California. She was there when we rescued Baxter, when I met my wife, when we lost Bijou, rescued Nala, and then lost Baxter. She has seen all of it.

Every company I’ve built, every decision I’ve made, started with this dog. She has fought through so much. Health scares, medication, years of unknowns. And she still wakes up every morning like she’s got somewhere to be.

“Take me to the beach. I’ve got birds to chase.”

She is not an old dog. She is not geriatric. She is not “a senior.” She is our best girl. And we’re going to do everything we can, until her very last breath, to make sure she is happy and healthy.

Happy 16, Soph.

Nine years ago today, we brought home a cat who’d been found alone in the mountains of Colorado.

She’d been adopted twice and returned twice.

And since the day she came home, she’s been the best little girl.

She’s also proof that the cat distribution system is real, intentional, and somehow always gets the right cat to the right people.

It was so sweet watching Baxter and Sophie take Nala under their wings and instantly make her part of the family. And now watching Nala do that for Cosmo.

I may call her “Baby Stupid” and “Little Dumbo” every day, but I love her more than I can explain.

Here’s to our very tiny, very scary, very sweet little lady.

Spoiler alert: this is a happy post. Not a worry post.

Not too long ago, we did an amazing senior / end-of-life photoshoot with Sophie. She sprinted up and down the beach, posed for photos, and smiled so perfectly for the camera for two hours. But that’s Sophie. She’s closer to 16 than 15 now. She’s been diagnosed with Cushing’s and hypothyroidism for years, has some neurological pain in her spine and legs, and has her ups and downs, but at least once a day, she can still be seen sprinting on the beach.

This little girl is so important to me. Before my wife @lizzzlybear, before Baxter, before Bijou, Nala, and Cosmo, it was just Sophie and me. She has been to hell and back with me more than a few times, and I still can’t believe she’s here and doing as well as she is. Outside of my wife, who has known me for about 4 years less than Sophie, there is no more important relationship in my life than my relationship with this dog.

When Baxter died last year, at my lowest point, I remember thinking, “She’s going to be gone soon, too.” I was already preparing myself for another heartbreak. But here she is, getting ready for Thanksgiving, posted up in the kitchen, ready to grab anything that hits the ground.

Caring for Sophie is tough. If you look at how some of the pharmaceutical stocks are doing this year, Sophie is likely a line item in those gains. Medicine time at our house is an event, twice a day. She is a frequent flyer at @modernanimal. I still wake up in the middle of the night to check on her, and at least once a week, I give myself a minor heart attack because there’s an extra beat between breaths, and my brain goes straight to the worst place.

I am so thankful for my family. And I will forever be incredibly grateful for more than 15 years of love from Sophie.

Forever thankful for @dogtographer.la, who gave us a night we will never forget with our girl. The best pet photographer on Earth.

Today I sent an email to a real estate agent in Japan to ask questions about buying a place where we could live 4-6 months a year.

It just feels right, you know? 🇯🇵
