it’s probs a cover up for something else…

here’s how you can overcome this story in your creative work:

✍️ the writer: you’re waiting for the perfect outline before you write page one. 
messy move: write 200 bad words today.

🎨 the artist: you’re reorganising your studio, supplies and Pinterest boards instead of making the piece. 
messy move: a 20-minute sketch with whatever’s on your desk.

💻 the business owner: you’re rebuilding your Notion, your pricing sheet and your CRM before you tell anyone about your offer.
 messy move: send the offer to three people exactly as it is.

📱 the content creator: you’ve planned 30 days of content and posted none of it. 
messy move: post once a day for a month. messy. (this is the one that more than doubled my followers.)

🎓 the course or product maker: you won’t launch until everything is mapped out. 
messy move: run it live with three people and fix it as you go.

turns out @cristelsmithaguero may be our resident Queen of Climbing Cringe Mountain, but it’s not because it comes easy to her - it’s because she knows everything she wants to make and put out into the world is on the other side of it

the cycle of wanting your work to be visible while also being absolutely freaking terrified about how it - and you - may be perceived? super super common

but if you’re waiting for the way through to arrive when you suddenly feel more brave than you ever have before, you’re going to be waiting a really long, really boring amount of time

the way through is not transforming into a new person, it’s practising the microhabit of being willing to look like a FOOL, being willing to get reeeeal uncomfortable, and being willing to - even when it’s scary! - press publish

it’s December 20th ish and you’re like “damn I’m so glad I came across that random carousel post and actually did those 4 actions that week because look at me now 😎”

hello stop right there if you’re about to whittle your work down from its biggest and best form to something that’s more ‘palatable’ 🌝

you’re worried about judgement from people who we can PROMISE you aren’t lying awake at 2am thinking about the song you chose for that round-up post

but here you go again, making it more beige so you don’t ruffle their feathers?? you’re editing to your own fear which means these things usually get cut:

- the opinion you softened -> could’ve become the reason someone followed you
- the joke you deleted -> proof that there’s a real person behind the piece
- the weird idea you shelved -> even though it’s the most interesting thing you could’ve shared with your fellow humans today
- the line that felt like ‘too much’ -> the line someone else is desperately hoping to hear out loud
- the specific story you made generic -> the parts other people would’ve seen themselves reflected in

ouch

so INSTEAD the next time you go to make that delicious beautiful creativity of yours more ‘fit for size’, ask:

is this note coming from an opinion you actually want informing your work - ie yours - or from the imaginary audience inside your head?

we want you to leave all the good bits in, so go and stuff back in the odd bits, the unique bits, the beautiful bits, the you bits, otherwise we’ll all just bore each other to tears in an endless beige parade 🙃

hot tip: stop saving everyone else’s how-to guides and make your own for exactly whatever it is you’re avoiding in your creative projects!!!

our brains are silly glorious little creatures and this is one way we can hack them into moving from ‘ergh not today thank you’ to ‘oh wow can’t believe how simple that was’ in just 3 Easy Steps™

like:

‘I don’t know where to start with fixing my portfolio’ becomes ‘how to pick the 6 projects that show what I’ve done and what I want to do more of’

or

‘I have no idea where to start with this grant’ becomes ‘how to highlight the 3 questions I know I’ve already answered before’

or

‘this album is never getting finished’ to ‘how to finish just the next 60 minutes’ worth of work on it’

it works for anything and everything, the crazier the better, because as with many things in life, making your way through the unknown of a new creative project is simply about Just Keeping On Going

take it from a gal who has over 6,500 notes in her notes app - if you’re not using it to fight imposter syndrome and make momentum on your creative work every day, you’re working harder, not smarter!!!

(sure one of those notes may be a diagram I can’t quite understand now that I’m looking at it two months later but that’s neither here nor there)
