Every other brand seems to be chasing one goal: net zero by 2050.But “net zero” doesn’t automatically mean “zero pollution.”A company can still emit greenhouse gases, as long as it claims to balance the remaining emissions through carbon removals or offsets. Sometimes that’s part of a credible climate strategy. Sometimes it’s a shortcut that delays the harder work of actually cutting emissions.That’s why the words alone aren’t enough.Before celebrating a net zero pledge, ask:• How much is the company actually reducing its own emissions?• Is it relying heavily on offsets?• Are its targets independently validated (for example, by the Science Based Targets initiative)?Climate claims deserve the same scrutiny as nutrition labels. The plant you were told not to touch has been clothing people for generations.In North Sikkim’s Dzongu Valley, the Lepcha community has long transformed stinging nettle (surong) into fibre. It’s a practice rooted in local knowledge, using a plant that grows naturally in the region without irrigation or pesticides while helping stabilize fragile mountain slopes.It also puts our idea of “innovation” into perspective. A single cotton T-shirt can require around 2,700 litres of water to produce, roughly what one person drinks over two and a half years.It is often assumed that sustainability will come from inventing something entirely new. But many communities have been working with nature, rather than against it, for centuries. Their knowledge evolved through a deep understanding of local landscapes, seasons and resources.
