It’s my favorite time of year. The trees have shed their leaves, the colors are vibrant, and if you pay attention, you can recognize the trees blindfolded just by their scent. This is the Mahua tree. I finally got to visit one for the very first time yesterday in Dungarpur, while traveling with the Sambhaav team for the work Shubhangi is doing with them around seed saving and water conservation.Around 11 AM, when the sun was overhead, it was hot but the air was cool. We came across a tribal man collecting the blossoms. He told us that Mahua is wise; it chooses the right temperature of the soil to cover the earth so the flowers aren't wasted. They fall in the cool, dark hours of the early morning, carpeting the ground with a super sweet, soothing scent. For his people, the Mahua is the "Tree of Life." While we were heading to discuss saving seeds amongst the tribals and the villagers, he reminded us that the Mahua has been saving them for generations. It’s a nutritional lifeline. There are two Mahua trees; both are identical. It’s just that one flowers in spring, which is a little bitter, and another flowers around the monsoons, which is sweeter. The bitter ones (which are actually sweet and not literally bitter) are used to make country liquor and are commonly used by Adivasis in central India. The sweeter flowers of the monsoon are shade-dried and stored for when food is scarce. They turn the dried flowers into laddoos, grind them into flour for flatbreads, or boil them with a bit of grain into a rich, sweet porridge. He explained that every blossom is a medicine with cooling properties. The juice of the fresh flowers is a cooling tonic against the scorching Rajasthan heat and a natural remedy for fatigue.Hearing him, I realised how disconnected we are from the trees and the forest… how little we know about trees, the nurturers of life on Earth!#Mahua #madhucalongifolia by @greenofaaya

In the times where market is full of beautiful spotlesss and tasteless hybrid thai guavas. We feel blessed to have a guava tree to pluck and eat the real fresh and tasty fruit. Spots are real and tasty. #FoodSecurity #foodforest #greenofaayaaa by @greenofaaya

It’s the story of a small park near our home. Two old Siris trees (Albizia lebbeck) had been standing there for decades tall, strong, and full of life. About 5feet circumference. The boundary wall around the park had become weak over the years, and a tender was issued for rebuilding the wall and footpath. In the process, both of these beautiful trees were cut down.We grew up climbing them, resting under their shade, admiring their flowers. They brought us immense joy. Little squirrel that my son and I used to play peek a boo, who lived in the hollows of this tree are gone somewhere. It was a time of the year when there are no leaves on the tree of siris. And dumb people, 90% of the residents here and the contractor easily said it aas a dead tree. There were no leaves and refused to know in their whole life the tree is thriving. Siris trees naturally lose their leaves in winter, but that doesn’t make them dead. Their wet wood and seed pods showed they were alive. It’s heartbreaking to see how easily something so alive, so valuable, can be erased in the name of convenience and ignorance. by @greenofaaya
