Summer is gone and we are looking forward to October and all the special events it brings to our Island.

Jumping right in, we join the Moonstone Riders on a rock and roll journey through a swampy world of twanged out psychedelic funk.

And then, we present to you The 11th Annual Jerry Garcia (Belated) Birthday Bash and Reef Relief Benefit.

Next up is the return of Guavatron, from South Florida–they keep their roots of dance, rock, electronica and funk alive.

Then, we welcome Dr. Bacon from Asheville, NC, for a night of funked up roots, rock n’ roll, and danceable music.

The following night we have three special sets with DJ Logic and Electric Blue Yonder. Be here.

Then suddenly, it’s Goombay Weekend! Be here as Miami’s explosive, Grammy-nominated, 7-piece Latin/Funk Fusion band Xperimento hits the stage all weekend!

Fantasy Fest Week at The Parrot begins ios
course with Tony Baltimore re-creating a Fab Four Show with his Beatle Band.

The following two nights, we host two pelvis-grinding nights of “Your Favorite Band!”, Igor and The Red Elvises.

Then, Thursday we host our Funk It Up! party with fan favorite Trae Pierce & The T-Stones. And they’ll be putting it into overdrive all weekend long.

Coming out of the Fantasy Fest Glitter Fog and leading into HalloWeekend, Augusta, Georgia-based Funk You brings the party with their dance-driven, horn-heavy grooves to close out the month in costume.

And, no October would be complete without The Green Parrot Annual Halloween Costume Party, this year celebrating our 52nd year (we think!).

Add in some special evenings with The Happy Dog, and Waynard Scheller’s Rainbow Full of Sound, and we’ve got ourselves a month to be grateful for.

Add in a roster of local talent we are so fortunate to have, plus Ukulele Night, and Monday Night Charity Bingo, and you have some cool, autumn action that makes you glad to be here, visitors and locals alike.

All this and more, just for the price of a beer and a smile, never a cover at The Green Parrot Bar, Your Southernmost Center for Fantasy Culture of All Kinds, while not for the cultural elite, certainly for the culturally deprived.

Heading our way from West Palm Beach, electronic jam rockers Guavatron make their return to the Green Parrot stage this weekend with sets at at 5:30, 9:00 and 11:00pm on Friday and Saturday, and at 5:30pm Sunday.

Expect smooth jams and hard-hitting electronica; a sonic barrage of pop sprinkled with an array of inspired covers that range from funk to reggae to 80s and 90s disco—think Talking Heads to Clapton to The Cars.

Guavatron features Cory Ricardy (Drums, Vocals), Rodney Hansen (Keyboards), Casey Luden (Bass, Vocals), and Adonis Frangiskakis (Guitar, Vocals).

Zander Burns (guitar/vox), Ryan Buck (drums/vox), Jeff Clark (guitar/keys/vox), and Andy Yoshi (bass/vox).

Today, on what would have been his 118th birthday, we remember the Key West folk artist, Mario Sanchez, October 7th, 1908 - April 28th, 2005.

Self-taught, a self-described “painter of memories”, his intricately painted bas-relief wood carvings depict scenes of everyday early 20th century Key West life, painted from memories of his childhood here.

Among those is “Sanchez Corner”, one with particular significance for us as it depicts a grocery owned by Antonio Sanchez, Mario’s paternal grandfather. The store, built in 1890, is easily recognizable in the artwork as the Parrot of today.

Some years back, we commissioned artist David Wegman to produce a suitable homage to our corner’s Sanchez Legacy as a remembrance to both Antonio, the industrious immigrant turned grocer, and his grandson Mario, the boy turned world-famous artist, providing us with a remarkable and personally-imagined glimpse into the long-ago world of Antonio and Mario.

One Wegman panel shows a young Mario, smiling contentedly, as he stands on a ladder stocking shelves for his grandfather.

On another panel we see the mature Mario, now fully-realized, standing proudly, brush in hand, a man firmly in control of his medium.

By way of explanation, in his carvings Mario always placed clouds drifting high above his subjects as his whimsical way to provide vignettes or insights into the images depicted.

Wegman venerably followed suit with these visual cues, so we see a cloud above the young Mario’s head, stocking shelves happy in his work, but still with his dreams of someday becoming an artist in some exotic locale.

And, in what is easily the most moving detail of the panels, we see the now fully-realized Mario, in his cloud with dreams of again being a little boy, back in Sanchez Corner, stocking the shelves contentedly with Antonio.

Of his work, Sanchez adopted as his motto: “Se que mi modesto arte no es bueno, pero gusta,” or “I know my modest art isn’t good, but it pleases.”

The Green Parrot Ukulele Association monthly meeting will be held tonight, Wednesday, October 7th at 8pm with co-hosts Wavy Dave, Bubba Low Note, and Jeff Clark.

For folks seeking a little pick-me-up these days, and who isn’t, Ukulele Night at The Green Parrot might be just the ticket.

As singer-songwriter Louden Wainright III once put it, “In terms of Improving one’s mood and general outlook I consider the ukulele to be the big gun.”

So dig out that old ukulele from your attic or hall closet and strum your way into a four-string frenzy at Green Parrot Ukulele Night, Key West’s only ukulele-powered jam session.

Come to just listen, or join in.

Get your daubers ready as we kick off tonight’s Green Parrot Monday Night 100% for Charity BiNGO, from 7-9pm, benefitting The Sunrise Rotary of Key West, as they wrap up their Key West OktoBREWfest weekend.

Come out tonight night at 7:00pm, as we once again bring the creative and artistic forces of our town together to create a great fundraising opportunity to benefit one of the many local non-profits of our little island.

Prizes will be awarded after each round (think beer tonight!) and cards are only $1.00 and as usual 100% of money raised goes to the particular charity featured that week.

Today’s the day! The 11th Annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash kicks off at 1:00. There will be drink specials (hey we even brought in blue curaçao!), raffles aplenty and generous silent auction items, all with the goal of raising money for Reef Relief and their endless conservation and education programs.

For your listening pleasure, we’ll be playing Dead Ahead on the big screen, with sound, to kick things off before The Happy Dog takes the stage from 3:00-7:00.

We also have some great event coozies and stickers with proceeds going right to Reef Relief, available at the bar today and online tomorrow!

The Jerry Garcia Foundation has long been a strong supporter of Reef Relief and its mission, and has inspired Reef Relief to bring together the local community for this annual event to celebrate the life of one of the greatest musicians of all time as well as raise awareness for our unique marine environment here in The Keys.

Looking forward to another weekend of solid music on the corner of Southard and Whitehead. Come join Moonstone Riders on a rock and roll journey through a swampy world of twanged out psychedelic funk!

Headed ALL the way down the road from Naples, The Riders are inspired by the music of jam bands, funk, classic rock and outlaw country, producing their own cosmic vibe filled with improvisational jams of covers and originals alike.

The band is Matt Benfield (guitar/vocals), Marcia Winslow (vocals/percussion), Jeffrey James (bass/vocals), Alexander Granados (trombone) and Alejandro Yaguaracuto (drums).

Three opportunities to catch them on Friday and Saturday, with sets at 5:30, 9:00, and 11:00 each night.

Reminder that Sunday is our Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash for Reef Relief!
