Pinch me !!! 40 Green councillors elected in Lewisham + I still can’t quite believe I get to be one of them.

Thank you so much to all the legends who powered our campaign in Telegraph Hill: neighbours knocking doors after work, pals delivering leaflets in the rain, community groups sharing their vision, residents choosing hope over the status quo again and again.

Together, we’ve won a mandate for real change: bold climate action, divestment, resisting austerity + gentrification, and protecting the community spaces that hold us together.

We had our inductions today at @lewishamcouncil and there’s so much to learn and get to grips with, but it also really felt like the beginning of a new chapter for Lewisham.

I feel incredibly lucky to be doing it alongside my fellow ward councillors @beckyfortelegraphhill and @greennicktorry and so many brilliant people across @lewishamgreens.

Thank you to every single person who supported us over the last year. This is all of our win 💚💚💚💚 by @greenparty_kate

Telegraph Hill, yet another ward that’s turned full GREEN 💚 by @greenparty_kate

Thanks to the legends showing up week after week to turn Lewisham Green 🤝

Every conservation on the doorsteps builds from the ground up, bringing us closer to a more hopeful, people-powered politics.

Particular shout out to @gndrising folk who were a class addition to our campaign a few weekends ago - it means a lot to have the backing of the movement that taught me how to campaign, organise and the true meaning of solidarity.

👆 I hope to bring all that experience to the council and work with residents to take collective action on the issues that matter most - from better public services, to clean air, to divestment from genocide.

DM if you wanna get involved but don’t know where to start !!! by @greenparty_kate

We’re pleased to support #WorldCarFreeDay in Lewisham with this event in Telegraph Hill today.

Events like this where neighbours can get together in their communities show what the possibilities are for using our public space when it’s not dominated by motor traffic. by @greenparty_kate

Watch this space for what we do next! by @greenparty_kate

Litter picking and weeding along Wallbutton Road!

Some very satisfying before and after photos. It was great being able to make a tangible difference in such a short amount of time.

Even though residents and the street cleaner had been out relatively recently we still collected several bags of rubbish and even more of greenery.

We organised this as part of the #lovelewisham campaign which is providing litter picking equipment to anyone who wants it, a crackdown on fly tipping including more CCTV at known hotspots, and micro grants to communities to make their slice of Lewisham that little bit nicer!

We need our MPs to choose climate action over more fossil fuels.

Lewisham Green Party is calling on Lewisham’s Labour MPs @ellie_reeves80 @vfoxcroft @janetdaby to oppose extensions to fossil fuel licences.

Swipe through to read our letter, then tag your MP in the comments and urge them to vote against further fossil fuel extraction. by @greenparty_kate

If you have the chance to attend one of the climate emergency briefings @nebriefingup popping up across London, do it ‼️

Sitting alongside Lewisham residents, hearing ONCE AGAIN the scale of the crisis, I felt wave after wave of grief and anger at the countless chances to act that have been missed by our politicians.

What I valued most about the briefing was that it made space for those feelings, but didn’t leave us there. It brought us back collectively to the question that matters most: what do we do next?

We spoke about organising. Putting pressure on our MPs. Taking adaptation and resilience into our own hands. And, of course, the part local authorities have to play in our transition.

Those conversations stayed with me as we met on Thursday for our first Sustainable Development Committee of the year. While the challenge is global, we have responsibility to act locally and to bring people with us.

We heard from our new Cabinet Member for Environment about his ambitions for the year ahead, from retrofit to active travel, and discussed how the committee can help translate that vision into real results. Shout out @robin_lewisham_greens for chairing 🙌

We’ll be discussing the council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan specifically at our next Sustainable Development Committee meeting in September. If you’d like to chat beforehand, please drop me a DM. by @greenparty_kate

More Play Streets, please 🚸

This weekend’s street party on Kitto Road showed what’s possible when we give streets back to people, even for a day.

With music, food, community groups, neighbours catching up and children able to play safely, it was a reminder of how much our public spaces can offer when they’re designed for community rather than traffic.

Thanks to @skehansfreehouse, @hillstationcafe_ + everyone who helped organise such a brilliant day 🫶 by @greenparty_kate

A week in the life: new councillor edition ⤵️

From community events and festivals to youth organising, migrant justice, and meeting some of the incredible people working to strengthen our neighbourhoods, it’s been a busy + rewarding week.

What doesn’t always make it onto Instagram is the work happening behind the scenes: supporting residents with casework, holding meetings with constituents and preparing for upcoming committee meetings.

So if there’s an issue you’d like support with, please do get in touch via kate.anderson@lewisham.gov.uk.

You can also come along to our next ward surgery at the Telegraph Hill Centre on Saturday (27th June) from 11:00am–12:30pm. We’d love to hear from you. 🙌 by @greenparty_kate
