Yesterday I was heartbroken to hear that Nong Emmy @emmyapp had passed away. She is together again with her beloved, Nong Beer @beer.soranut, whom she missed deeply since we lost him a couple years ago. Beer and Emmy made Thai cannabis history by opening the iconic Sukhumweed Dispensary on day one of legalization. There, they grew community and graciously welcomed everyone. Yesterday was also Thai Cannabis Day, four years since that first day.For those in the industry here, we have faced wild and tumultuous times: from the rapid, unregulated green boom, from the political pivots, prime minister drama, false starts, frustrating bureaucracy, and now a heavy shift into a regulated medical market. I salute everyone in this space who has persevered throughout all these obstacles. We honor the legacy of Thai OGs like Beer and Emmy. We need to stay community strong and support one another. We’re here because we’re passionate about the plant, and will grow together however we have to. Freedom for Thai cannabis! สู้ๆ my friendsrest in peace, sweet angel🙏❤️‍🔥🇹🇭#thaicannabis #thaicannabisday #sukhumweed by @greentlife

When I set out to write this article, I only had an inkling of the stories I would uncover. As we coordinated Zoom calls across multiple time zones, each one of my subjects was so gracious to really dig into their roots and share their personal lore. As the stories got deeper, going back generations, this was more than just a highlight piece, but really honoring these important cultural and American histories. And I got to interweave my own Thai American full-circle journey into the tapestry too.Thank you so much @leafmagazine for making my full extended piece available online! Thank you again to my subjects, it was an honor and pleasuring connecting with y’all!Full story link in bio! 🙏🌏🏝️#aapi #cannabisindustry #leafmagazine by @greentlife

สุขสันต์วันสงกรานต์!I had a massive migraine this weekend and was not in the mood for the usual heat, crowds, and chaos, so on the last day of Songkran I opted for the more traditional tamboon, or making merit.Songkran, the Thai New Year, is traditionally one of the most religious holidays in the Buddhist calendar, during the hottest days of the year. Before it evolved into the giant water fight that it is known for globally, the roots of Songkran were about purification, renewal, and honoring family. At Khao Takiab, the Hua Hin Crab Bank releases young crabs to restore the marine ecosystem. Freeing animals back into the wild is one way to make merit, scoring karmic brownie points essentially. The idea is by doing good deeds, goodness will come back to you. So I released a horseshoe crab for my sister Belle and my new nephew, Dren, in New York.Fun fact: horseshoe crabs outlived the dinosaurs, and their blue blood is incredibly valuable in creating new medicines. Chok dee, buddy!🦀🌊🙏#songkran #huahin #thailand by @greentlife

Since I turned 40 last year, people say, “Auntie! But you look younger!”(Pls don’t call me Auntie, I’m still in denial) Well, no more gate-keeping, here are my “secrets” to youth. And ladies, 40 is not old. This is something to look forward to. I feel wiser, sharper, more feral, and I know how to take care of myself better. There is no prime because I’m gonna keep evolving.📈🌻🌞#older #wiser #growth by @greentlife

Much respect to the Cali legacy growers, but it’s been a decade and these strains still dominate the shelves here in Thailand. With good reason: they’re potent, pungent, and pretty buds that sell really well. But when everyone only grows within a small genetic pool, and not everyone produces quality, there leaves very little variety in the strains for consumers to enjoy. Sometimes I’ll go into a dispensary and about 80% of available cultivars are similar in genetics. It’s difficult to discern between them and takes away the fun from exploring different terpene profiles. The beauty of caททabis is in its genetic diversity: different cultivar genes code for multiple blends and ratios of caททabinoids and terpenes for unique effects and experiences. With a market demand focused on hype and high T*C, consumers and especially medical caททabis patients are sorely missing out. California’s caททabis legacy is also how breeders used to create strains for patients in the 20 years under the Compassionate Use Act, where legacy growers grew for patients over profit. In Thailand where we are pivoting to a medical model, there needs to be vertically integrated education from consumer, clinic, to cultivation, on the benefits of selecting specific strains with desired therapeutic effects. Much love to those who do grow incredible Cali legacy strains, and especially to those who truly do it for the love by diversifying their genetics, even for strains that naturally take longer to flower and do not yield as much. If any Thai farms think they grow the best Cali legacy genetics, you’re welcome to try to win me over!Let’s get our strains straight here in Thailand before the Toad Venom invasion!🐸☠️#thaicannabis by @greentlife
