Very excited to meet the excellent @terrastringquartet before Thanksgiving as they workshopped a quartet with composer @greg_sandow for our album sessions together in January. The prize-winning quartet is based in NYC and is in residence at Yale. #latergram #rehearsal #stringquartet #newmusic #composerlife taken in NYC by @greg_sandow

In the new Apple series Monarch, about a world in which monsters like Godzilla are real, a witty touch. Godzilla shelters and evacuation routes in Tokyo, with affectionate signage. Actually a meta touch, layering our affection for Godzilla films on the real (in the TV series) danger of a monster attack. by @greg_sandow

This new single from Björk and Rosalía makes me delirious! “Oral,” it’s called, and it raises money to fight salmon farming in Iceland, which can hurt wild salmon DNA. But the delirious swirl of the voices, twining with a high instrumental line! And the unexpected ending! Two of the most creative minds in all music. https://youtu.be/8jsi2Tgvx6A?si=580-DR2xBzdgfY7S by @greg_sandow

Halloween was so good. People coming by, families, groups of friends, trick or treaters…”I love your decorations,”’kids would say, picking out their candy. The hulking big animatronic, with the threatening wings, the beak, the glowing red eyes…people kept making videos. And the spider that jumped out from the bushes! Right at people walking by in the street. They shrieked with delight. (Rafa set up the spider, perfectly.) We’ve shaken our heads, wondering why we splurge on this stuff. Last night it came to me. The splurge isn’t for us, not even for Rafa. We brought such joy to so many people! Made me so happy. by @greg_sandow

One of our three cats, Beluga, was licking the cat fountain. Licking so vehemently that her tongue slapped the plastic. Water wasn’t coming out of the fountain, and Beluga wanted some! She started batting at the fountain with her paw. Notable thinking for a cat, I thought. Not that she knows how to make the fountain work again, but she was trying. “How can I make water come out of this thing?” by @greg_sandow

I love this, from a review of a Chemical Brothers live show, in the Guardian: “Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons are indistinct within a looming ring of keyboards, drum machines, laptops and mixers. It isn’t clear, through darkness and dry ice, what precisely they are doing to conjure the mesmeric thunder of a Chemical Brothers live show. But they are busy as druids in a stone circle, working magic among the machines.” Love that last line! Someday I hope I’ll see something 1/10 as good in a classical music press release. by @greg_sandow

Well, let’s expand the fine print — Five Things I’ve Learned About the Death of Classical Music. That’s the class I’m doing November 9, on the lively Five Things I’ve Learned website. Will I say classical music will die? No, but I do think it’s threatened, because people outside the field care less about it than ever before. One of the many issues I’ll discuss! November 9, 8 to 9:30 PM US Eastern time, you can watch live or on video at any time. $40, to pay the site’s expenses, and to pay me a little, as I draw on my life’s work in classical music to make this engrossing and informative. Where WILL classical music go in the future? Join me to discuss. https://myfivethings.com/class/the-death-of-classical-music/ by @greg_sandow

Alien invasion or fireworks?

It's like a war zone on our back deck. Fireworks surrounding us, set off from as close as 100 ft away.

Nonstop.

LOUD!

They mostly look like photo 2, but they feel like photo 1.

A piece of one of them fell along our deck, skittering, shooting sparks. Rafa said he felt its heat on his shoeless foot.

Illegal fireworks, of course. Am I a party pooper saying that, or a voice of sane safety?

Column B, I think. by @greg_sandow

Happy 4th, everyone! Even if you're not in the US, being happy is good.

And, oops…Min Kwon's America/Beautiful project kicks off in two hours! At 3 PM, US Eastern time. Should have posted this earlier!

Min is playing variations on "America the Beautiful" that she commissioned from 75 composers. Including two by me.

Mine won't be heard till a live performance July 8, not streamed. But I'll be watching today to support Min, and hear what my colleagues wrote.

https://youtu.be/edHE-cJJ3M4, if you'd like to join me. And for more streamed variations July 5, 6, and 7, you'll find links at https://www.america-beautiful.com by @greg_sandow
