The organ in the Jerusalem Synagogue in Prague.

During my last visit to the Czech Republic, I had the opportunity to visit many organs, and one of the most interesting was, surprisingly, in a synagogue.

The organ was built in 1906 by the Czech organ builder Emanuel Štěpán Petr.

The organ survived the war, unlike another sinagog organ in Prague that was damaged during the bombing of the city in World War II.

Much of Jewish musical culture was destroyed in the Holocaust. But this organ, along with the musical tradition it represents, survived, as did many other instruments and works by Jewish composers, and will continue to be heard.

The organist at the end of the post is Petr Veselý. I’m very grateful to him for his hospitality and for the CD he gave me as a gift, recordings of Jewish organ music made in that very synagogue.

Unfortunately, due to Instagram’s copyright restrictions, I wasn’t able to upload even a part of the recordings in any form. I highly recommend looking up recordings of organ and choir from the Jerusalem Synagogue in Prague, and generally jewish organ music. taken in Jerusalem Synagogue, Prague, Czech Republic by @gregory_zazovski

Toccata and Fugue in D minor (by Bach?) Part 3: This time, I decided to include the earliest surviving copy of the notes, in the handwriting of Johannes Ringk.

Bach fugue in D minor part 1, Because apparently, 40 seconds is already way too long for Instagram, witch makes sens, but it's still annoying though

Today marks the 276th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach.

On this occasion, here's one of the most famous works associated with his name: the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565.

Although its authorship is still debated, it remains one of the most iconic works in the organ repertoire.

The Fugue will be continued in two more videos because it's simply too long for Instagram. 😅

For those who asked whether the Saturday concerts are performed on an electronic org (אורגנית חחח). This is what the organ looks and sounds like.

Piece: Lemmens, Fanfare.
