Thank you to Joshua Barone for this wonderful preview of my new opera for the New York Times. Link in bio! The opera features the world-class Opera Philadelphia chorus, and I have no words to express how amazed I am at the musicianship of this 60-person ensemble tackling this massive chorus part. The opera also stars the incredible singers @susanne_sopran , @jonghyun__park , and @bmajorbaritone alongside the exquisite Opera Philadelphia orchestra led by Corrado Rovaris. A composer couldn’t ask for more sensitive artists to perform a new work. The production, by my close collaborator @jennykoons, is a mesmerizing dreamscape.

A god leads us constantly by the hand.
Were it not so, where would we end up?
Have we any guarantee that we
could endure things without some higher power –
could we persist without such support,
which we fail to see because it is a riddle to us?
Everything is dreamlike: our homes,
our businesses, our trades, our daily bread,
our cities and countries, the light, the sun. by @gregoryhspears

Friends! We have recorded SECRETS, our commission by @gregoryhspears for the @frickcollection; if you missed it, you'll get to hear it soon. Swipe to revel in the THREE keyboards it required: a 19th-century @steinwayandsons piano with a nostalgic yet jewel-like tone; a Flemish harpsichord; and a portative organ by Klop. Each lent their unique sonorities to the piece's larger canvas. See the #linkinbio to get a ping when it's released! by @gregoryhspears

It was such an enchanting experience watching my latest opera, Sleepers Awake, premiere last month on stage. The Opera Philadelphia team, led by the visionary Anthony Roth Costanzo, were exceptional. Our cast was exquisite. The director, Jenny Koons and her stellar design team including Jason Ardizzone-West, Yuki Link, and Maiko Matsushima, amazed me every step of the way, as did the world class OP chorus led by the fearless Elizabeth Braden and conducted by the genius Corrado Rovaris. There are just too many people to thank here! Was it all a dream?

So delighted to hear the New York Choral Society perform my new Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei for the Mozart Requiem last night at Lincoln Center. Bravi tutti! by @gregoryhspears

Sleepers Awake stirs the silence of conformity, confronting the sway of collective thought, the solitude of the outsider, and the many forms of our own unknowing slumber.

In this scary and uncertain moment of our history, making art can feel fragile and removed. Yet there is deep meaning in standing within a work that seeks to unravel the forces that shape how we think, move, and follow. To create together is, in itself, a kind of awakening.

Congratulations to the entire cast and creative team of the @seattleopera production of Fellow Travelers! Four performances still to come through March 1.

Grateful for Thomas May’s thoughtful words in the Seattle Times:

“The opening-night audience responded with palpable emotion, underscoring why the opera has endured since its 2016 premiere and become one of the most widely staged contemporary American works…

Spears’ music combines the driving pulsations of American minimalism with elaborate ornamental phrases and dance-inflected rhythms that evoke the Renaissance and Baroque and lend a poetic, faintly ceremonial air, as if the lovers were enacting a courtly ritual within the drab machinery of midcentury Washington.”
