On Friday, August 21st, I had the great honor of attending a masterclass with Golden Globe and Best Actress in a Drama Series winner Rhea Seehorn @rheaseehorn. Additionally, one of the questions I submitted for the event was selected, and I got to directly ask Rhea my question. Following the masterclass, I also had the opportunity to have a few personal conversations with her and take photos.

Rhea is best known for her big performances in Vince Gilligan’s Better Call Saul and Pluribus, but meeting her in person also showed me how authentic, bubbly, and incredibly friendly she is. Thanks again to Dodge for the opportunity. #dodgecollegeoffilmandmediaarts #chapmanuniversity #rheaseehorn #bettercallsaul #pluribus taken in Dodge College of Film & Media Arts at Chapman Univer by @grey_smith_motion

I was born in Columbus, Ohio, but moved to South Bend, Indiana, when I was 3 years old. My formative years were centered around being exposed to the arts at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame. With my father being the creative director, I had the opportunity from a young age to see art from different perspectives, scopes, and points of view.

But when I moved to Granville, Ohio, in the 5th grade, the transition was hard. I didn’t really thrive in the science and math favoring environment at my school. I struggled to fit in and was often left out or not included, whether that was in class, on the soccer field, or outside of school. And many people judged me for my individualistic lifestyle and for pursuing the arts.

Over my four years of high school, I attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp three times, received seven Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Awards for my stop motion animation films, created a large collection of work that I’m proud of, and even painted a large scale mural at a local Mexican restaurant, Day Y Noche, by myself.

But despite everything, there were still people who overlooked my talent, my worth, and what I had to offer, not just as an artist but as a person.

So, to my family and close friends who have supported me throughout this journey, I am beyond grateful for all the love and encouragement you have given me.

And to everyone who judged, criticized, and directly or indirectly insulted me: you only served as fuel for me to keep going. I’m very excited to continue my journey at Chapman University, where I’ll be studying Film and Television Production with an emphasis in Cinematography.

Honored to share that my stop motion animation film “Reflexion” was accepted into the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition and awarded the Top 25 Award of Excellence out of 5,785 submissions this year. I’m incredibly grateful for the recognition and support the exhibition has given my work throughout all four years of high school, where a total of seven of my films were selected for the competition. Thank you to everyone who has supported my filmmaking and artistic journey along the way. “Reflexion” and the other 6 films are viewable on my Youtube channel Grey Everett Smith Film. #ohioart #govenorsawards #highschoolart #highschoolfilmmakers #film taken in Rhodes State Office Tower by @grey_smith_motion

Thank you to the members of the Granville Arts Commission for selecting me as one of three students to receive a GAC Award, honoring me with the Visual Arts Award and a $750 scholarship. I’d also like to thank Granville Mayor Melissa Hartfield for presenting the award. I am incredibly grateful for this support, and I plan to put the scholarship toward my college education at Chapman University, where I will be studying Film and Television Production in the Dodge College program with an emphasis in cinematography as I continue pursuing my passion for filmmaking. #granvilleartscommission #gacaward #granvilleohio #filmmaker #artist @thediegorapp taken in Granville, Ohio by @grey_smith_motion

My film project @surrender_film has had its first kickoff with screen tests and dream sequences filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada. It has been a project that was started over five years ago with some sketches, dreams, visions and disciplined effort. @townbuilding_man was a great partner and reacted to my rough sketches and created beautiful storyboards that brought my characters and story to life. @tompatrickillustration and @nathaniel_underwoodart also collaborated on storyboards. I tightened up the script during the Covid years and also once again when I nearly lost my vision in my left eye from shingles and acquire postherpetic neuralgia on my forehead, temple and left eye area. The shingles reaction was due to the physical and mental stress of caring for and then losing my mother. The daily pain still persists and has added adventures in depression, body dysmorphia and pain management but also aided in my relentless pursuit to craft my vision and passion into this film. I want to thank all of my friends and family who have shown me love and support. Special thanks to @christopherdkay for creating these beautiful images and collaborating on this journey. And to the haters and doubters I continue to digest the negativity as fuel for my vision.
