this day last year (1st august) was the first day after my iddah ended.

i once read that the end of an iddah for a widow feels like learning to walk again. it truly has been like that.

today is our wedding anniversary. it would’ve been 9 years.

last year, Allah (swt) invited us for umrah right after my iddah ended. later i realized that we’d be in madinah for my wedding anniversary…the first one after his passing.

so i made my way to masjid nabwi to share my grief with rasulullah (saw).

“ya rasulullah,

do you know what happened to me?

i lost my husband. my life partner, my daughters’ father, my favorite person, my best friend.

and there are times when i think my heart will burst from the pain.

the only thing that eases my heart in those moments is remembering how you grieved your beloved khadija’s (ra) passing, how you never forgot her when even years later your heard a voice that sounded like hers and it brought back her memories.

i spent 27 months caring for my ill husband. 4 months and 10 days mourning him.

now i’ve come to you, ya rasulullah, with my children who are orphans. my older one is the same age you were when you lost your mother. and i know you understand her loss more than anyone else ever can.

we visited you with their father once. i hope he’s now in your company, ameen ya Rabb.

and i hope that when i meet you, you’re proud of me for how i endured this trial.”

the first eid after we got married came a month later and it was eid ul adha.

i remember everything…the joy, the excitement, the bliss of our honeymoon phase.

how quickly the days passed when you were here.

every day was eid with you and even eid doesn’t feel like eid without you.

it’s the day of arafah and you’re hearing about miracle stories.

you’re hearing how people had their duas accepted from one arafah to the next.

yet you’re still here, praying and hoping. it’s been years of repeating the same dua and you don’t seem any closer to having it. you know there are different forms of a dua’s acceptance, but you’ve been praying so hard so surely you’ll get what you want.

but you don’t.

then you wonder…“is something wrong me?”

“am i the problem?”

“am i so sinful that Allah ﷻ doesn’t accept my prayers?”

“is He displeased with me?”
