One year ago today, everything changed.

In an instant, I went from a D1 athlete to a man who couldn’t walk his dog or head down the stairs for work without a mental battle. My mobility was gone, and for the first time, I felt truly limited.

It may sound odd to hear, but throughout this process, I found myself incredibly grateful that God gave me this challenge. Looking back on this ‘tear-aversary,’ I realize it was the “reset” I didn’t know I needed. It was a call to slow down and focus on my roots—to rebuild my foundation from the ground up.

Throughout this entire year, my mindset has been: What’s done is done. I couldn’t change the injury, but I could choose to be the person who attacks the recovery with more relentless positivity than anyone else.

Because of that pursuit, I was able to finish an Ironman 70.3 just 7 months post-surgery and get back on the skis in Colorado at just 9 months. In about two weeks, at 366 days post-surgery, I’ll be lining up to complete a full marathon. I’ve learned that I am thankful for the trial, but I am obsessed with the comeback.

God doesn’t give you the challenge you want; He gives you the one you need to be ready for the blessings He has in store. Movement is a privilege—I refuse to take it for granted ever again.
