Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV premiered in New York City 25 years ago today, on November 2nd, 2001!

Unlike The Toxic Avenger's first two sequels, The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, which both received negative reviews, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV received mixed reviews and as of this year, has a 64% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite being the third sequel to The Toxic Avenger, Stan Lee's opening narration claims that Citizen Toxie is, in fact, the official sequel to the first film, disacknowledging the events of the first two sequels.

Shortly after the release of Citizen Toxie, director Lloyd Kaufman announced a fifth entry titled Toxic Twins: The Toxic Avenger V, which would revolve around Toxie and Sarah's twins. As of 2025, Troma has not begun official production on the sequel, and it is unknown if the project will still happen with the recent release of the Toxic Avenger reboot. by @grindhouseghoul

Roger Corman's Frankenstein Unbound was released in theaters #OnThisDay in 1990!

Often described as an ambitious but messy mash-up of themes, Frankenstein Unbound received a mixed reception, with reviewers highlighting a talented cast including John Hurt, Raul Julia, and Bridget Fonda, along with strong cinematography and atmospheric score, but criticize its confusing plot, dated special effects, and low production values.

Returning to the director's chair after a hiatus of almost fifteen years, Corman looked to known writers, including Wes Craven and Floyd Mutrux to craft an original, strong script before ultimately having F.X. Feeney adapt Brian Aldiss's novel Frankenstein Unbound with input from Corman himself. It would be Corman's final film as a director before his death in 2024. by @grindhouseghoul

Halloween VHS stack! What films are you watching tonight Ghoulies? 🎃📼🍿 #Halloween by @grindhouseghoul

On October 30, 1981, just one day before Halloween, John Carpenter’s 1978 classic made its network television debut on NBC, drawing millions of viewers who experienced Michael Myers’ reign of terror from their living rooms for the first time.

To meet broadcast standards, the film was heavily edited for language, violence, and nudity, trimming some of the intensity that shocked audiences in theaters.

However, NBC’s version also featured newly shot scenes Carpenter filmed in 1980 while working on Halloween II, including Dr. Loomis discovering the word “sister” carved into Michael’s door at Smith’s Grove, Laurie talking with her friends at school, and an extended introduction with Loomis and Marion Chambers.

These added moments gave television audiences fresh context and linked the original to its sequel in a subtle but effective way.

The broadcast became a landmark event, transforming a once low-budget indie thriller into a pop culture phenomenon as the eerie score and masked killer captivated homes across America on the eve of Halloween night. 🔪

Saturday the 14th was released in theaters #onthisday in 1981!

Saturday the 14th is a 1981 American comedy horror film starring real-life husband and wife Paula Prentiss and Richard Benjamin, co-written and directed by Howard R. Cohen and produced by Julie Corman.

Despite the implications of the film's title, it is a spoof of classic horror movies from the 1930s and 1940s, and not a parody of the Friday the 13th series or of slasher films of that type from the 1980s. It was followed by Saturday the 14th Strikes Back in 1988. by @grindhouseghoul

"The nightmare isn't over." Halloween II was theatrically released in the United States on this day in 1981!

The film opened at number one at the box office and while its gross earnings paled in comparison to the original's, Halloween II was a success in its own right, exceeding the earnings of other films of the same genre released in 1981: Graduation Day, Friday the 13th Part 2, Omen III: The Final Conflict, and The Howling. It went on to become the second-highest grossing horror film of 1981, behind An American Werewolf in London, and ranks fourth overall in the Halloween franchise's sales.

While some critics found it to be a more generic slasher film compared to the original, many viewers praise its darker tone, gore, and seamless continuation of the story from the first film, with some calling it the best sequel in the franchise. Halloween II was originally intended to be the final installment in the series to feature Michael Myers, but the character returned in sequels after the Halloween III: Season of the Witch diverged from the story.
