the painters’ cap: tote bag of the 1980s In the late 1980s, these cheap, colorful, logo-heavy hats were everywhere: painter’s caps. Over the decade, they moved from decorators’ workwear into corporate merchandise, and into menswear. Brands, bands, and events all put their logos on them. In many ways, they were the tote bags of the 1980s. They were inexpensive to produce and easy to print on, which made them ideal for expos, giveaways, and tour merch. Why they disappeared? elongated-toe shoes are back - and sharper than ever. I kept bookmarking them all season: Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Acne Studios, Comme des Garçons. Not Y2K nostalgia. Not even a statement. More like a recalibration of line - a little medieval, a little witchy, and very deliberately sexy. They stretch the silhouette, trick the eye, make the leg go on longer than it should - especially in skin-toned shades. The longer the toe, the stronger the illusion. Practical? Not really. MR PORTER has an interesting take right now: we’re no longer “anti-logo”. we’re post-post-logo. A logo today is either loud - but singular, or almost invisible - yet instantly recognisable. Quiet codes (if you know, you know) work on the same level as bold statements. It is no longer a choice between loud and quiet - it’s about knowing how to balance both. Mine: logos matter again, because there’s a story behind them. (or at least a very good version of one) by @griotte_jz
