BARREN DISCOMFORT.

Throughout this painting, fruit metaphorically symbolizes indigeneity and colonial resistance. Color held a significant role in this piece as I intentionally used red, black, green, and white for the Palestinian and Sudanese flags, along with red, yellow, and blue to symbolize the Democratic Republic of Congo. It holds heavy importance for me as a second-generation Congolese, Rwandan, and Nigerian to highlight the beauty amongst fellow intersecting, marginalized communities through unionizing our struggles. There are abstracted watermelons, olives, mangoes, and passionfruit weaving themselves between branches of abstraction, along with seeded organic structures, symbolizing alignment between shared colonized cultures across the Global South. Fruit is also utilized as representation of my connection, longing for restoration, and experiencing a home that lives inside me, though I have yet to visit my motherlands.

(Special thanks to @fivedollacam for featuring this piece in their exhibition!)

I am excited to finally share this piece, which has been a wondrous 16 month journey with the world! Thank you! by @groovyflorals

GRIEVING FRUIT
2023
14” x 11”
Gouache, Watercolor, Oil Pastel, Colored Pencil, Graphite, on Bristol

This piece is centered around global solidarity against colonization, and systemic oppression. Upon creating, I intentionally used a juxtaposition of organic lines along with angular geometric structures to illustrate maintaining empathy and love while living in cold structures designed to break us. I decided to depict fruit such as watermelons, oranges, and olives which are symbolic representations of Palestinian liberation. I also drew inspiration from other tropical fruits such as mangoes which grow in Congo, and pomegranate which also grow in Africa, and among other parts of the world. Much of the fruit painted is depicted either rotting, bleeding, or severed with thorns and barbed wire. Like fruit, the bleak effects of colonization, and resource exploitation have affected many indigenous cultures across the globe. It is important to stay vigilant and collectively support another, because we are not free until liberation is granted to all.

Colonization grieves nature; grieves the fruit. It grieves us; it grieves our spirit. It lacerates the natural order. It Decimates. It Erases. by @groovyflorals
