Our Moss Rock project received an ASLA Residential Honor Award this year. We are equally ecstatic and grateful to be among the other talented studios and award-winning projects!

Moss Rock is one of those projects we are constantly coming back to in the studio. The project started at the extents and worked inward: beginning with regenerating an existing woodland floor and reaching this ecotone towards the architecture with a plant palette from contextual cues. This fulfilling collaboration with the team and clients resulted in a working, nature-based play site that genuinely fits how the clients live.

Thank you ASLA, and the volunteer judges who promote our profession, review and catalogue the submissions for an extensive project library, and motivate us to come back to the core values of landscape architecture year after year.

I have been invited by @anacapa_architecture to present a solo exhibit at The Front Space in Santa Barbara.

ABSORB is a series of paintings I have been exploring for some time, and I am very excited to share my work. The work explores the pattern language of the landscape sites I visit — the eco-types, the colors and textures, the play of light and shadow that create the genius loci of a place. It's where I live, at the intersection of art and science.

I hope you can visit to see it in person.

Plant layout day: hot summer sun, cold popsicles, and a great crew getting plants into the ground. There’s no substitute for seeing a project take shape on-site!

This project is about reconnecting an early California garden to its architecture, taking cues from original vision of long views and linking intimate seating areas, with water sound carried throughout. A Mediterranean, dry-climate palette gives it structure while keeping it feeling lived-in.

Cheers to @foxlandscape for getting it built.🍦 by @groundstudiolandscape

Rather than placing the house on top of the terrain, Live Oak residence is nestled into a sloping clearing within an open meadow, blending quietly into the surrounding 50-acre site densely wooded with coast live oaks. The thoughtfully sited pool and pool house are especially inviting on long summer days - read more about the project in @d5designmag.

We’re celebrating a huge milestone at Ground Studio! It’s David LeRoy’s 20th anniversary with the studio.

Now a Partner and our Planting Design Director, David joined the studio in 2006 already carrying 15 years of experience designing and building landscapes across California. In the twenty years since, he’s become one of the foundational people who make Ground Studio what it is today. His planting sensibility has shaped the way we all think about space and design, and he’s lead the business through every stage of its growth.

If you have ever worked with David, as a collaborator, contractor, client, or employee, then you’ve witnessed his passion for design and horticulture. He considers every texture, shade, layer, rhythm, and movement in planting compositions. He understands exactly what each plant needs to thrive, botanically, and uses this to evoke a sense of place that is both ecologically functional and beautiful.

David not only leads the Napa studio as a Partner, but breathes life into nearly every project that comes through all of our offices as our Planting Design Director. Best of all, he still always makes time to mentor young designers with his trademark patience, curiosity, and care.

So, here’s to two decades of David! We are so lucky to have this humble, planting-loving, surfer dude at Ground Studio! by @groundstudiolandscape

Site update from a Bay Area project in progress. The plants and boulders have arrived, and it’s always a joy to direct the placement of elements that comprise a design composition.

The spatial relationships between plants and hardscape, composed with the vertical strokes of walls and boulders, are seeded at the very beginning of a project through site visits and concept sketches. Throughout design, those early ideas grow into forms and spaces with their own relationships to one another, like brush strokes on a painting. Each garden becomes more than just the sum of its parts.

The decision-making process moves from words and diagrams to character sketches and renderings, ultimately resulting in a garden that is both improvisational and carefully planned. by @groundstudiolandscape
