As one door closes another opens. Today is the final chance to see our Wash exhibition at the Hub Sleaford. However on Wednesday this week 4 November we are opening a lovely small show at the Sir Joseph Banks Centre in Horncastle, also Lincolnshire and featuring work about plants - as they have a significant herbarium there - by poet, Harriet Tarlo, visual artists Mary Naylor and Jane Prophet & film-maker James Murray-White whose film features a collaborative performance between Harriet Tarlo & composer Stevie Wishart and some remarkable drone footage of the Wash land-marsh-seascape. Horncastle is only 40 mins by car from the RSPB visitor centre at Frampton Marsh where Migration and Strata featuring @kelleher_liz and Karen Frances Eng aka @oculardelusion are showing painting and multi-media works providing visualisations in various forms about movements/ migrations & sounds of birds - featured in an earlier post. 🌊🦆 Migration and Strata, the next in GroundWork Gallery’s series of exhibitions emerging from its summer residency celebrating The Wash, is now open at RSPB Frampton Marsh.

Liz Kelleher’s Strata, Graphic Score translates the sounds of the Wash’s birdlife into a richly textured, tactile painting. Inspired by spectrograms from the Merlin Bird ID app, the chorus and cacophony become gestural marks, textures and colours, layered over a grid of scratched map lines. Some of the pigments are made from locally collected mud and plants — and visitors are encouraged to touch the artwork.

Karen Frances Eng’s Migration Symphony transforms a year of the reserve’s bird sightings data into a score for movement and sound. Hand-drawn glyphs and sounds performed on a digital synthesizer are conducted by the comings and goings of 175 species recorded at the marsh over the course of 2025. Drawing on the accumulated observations of birdwatchers, the work offers a contemplative experience of seasonal patterns that no individual observer could witness in their entirety.

Both look out over the marsh where the real birds are. 🪶

What if our world was centred around other-than-human wisdoms?

‘Multispecies Being (Cosmovision)’ imagines a timeless watery land, where the expansive wetland of The Wash is revered as a living being.

Inspired by the interspecies collaborations that have enabled the saltmarsh to grow 3-5m a year at #gibraltarpoint nature reserve, where the work is currently on show. Part of a group exhibition on the edge of The Wash @lincolnshirewildlifetrust Ongoing ponderings and explorations as part of the @groundworkgallery residency.

I had fun making this one, with some lovely human collaborations! Digging up clay that was once ancient saltmarsh with my dad on our farm in the fens, processed by hand with the smell of the sea and transformed by fire @_brickfield_ and @_claytrap_ into mud micro beings.

Bioelectrical sound recordings of saltmarsh plants bring insight into their inner world, sensing, signalling and photosynthesizing. Playing through the clay speaker. Fabric dyed with reeds and silkscreen printed with mud @johnhowardprint

On show at Gibraltar Point until Sunday - join us for printmaking and mud painting workshops with @emilybowers.studio and @rosy_prue

Multispecies Being (Cosmovision) Mixed media installation: Fen clay; cotton voile (dyed with reeds and rusty farmyard iron); wash mud silkscreen print; reed and elder ink and mud on board, bioelectrical recordings of intertidal plants

Thank you @sara.heywood for photos by @groundworkgallery

Sara Heywood took much better pics of our Gibraltar Point show - of course she is an artist. The first pic is her huge lumen print made on the muddy sure on show in Lill’s hut. Then we have a view of the Old Coastguard Station transformed into our gallery showing works by Katie Bliss, Emily Bowers, jane Sarre and Rosy Prue as well as Sara herself. All the works are made from and in response to the wonderful nature roundabout. The last pic is me having just slipped over in the mud, so thoroughly & appropriately ‘Washed’ though I can’t say I recommend taking immersion that seriously. @sara.heywood @katieblissmoon @emilybowers.studio @rosy_prue @janesarre @lincswildlifetrust #gibraltarpoint #nature #landscape by @groundworkgallery

A selection of images from our events over the weekend to open The Wash: Remember Nature - a tribute to this marvellous watery area by 27 artists in total with a nod to Gustav Metzger in his adopted town of King’s Lynn. As well as the works on show illustrated here by Liz Kelleher, Michal Bernasiak, Steven Follen, Sara Heywood, and many others, there are/were performances of the Wash poem by Harriet Tarlo accompanied by Stevie Wishart on violin & Petri Huurinainen playing his ‘resting space ( for migrating birds) at Greenland Fishery. There is so much to see and enjoy here now, plus at our ‘sister’ venues the hub at Sleaford and from next week the Old Coastguard Station Gibraltar Point.
