A special day at Volkswagen Downtown as we welcomed senior leaders from Škoda Auto and Škoda Auto Volkswagen India. The visit began with a traditional tilak and safa welcome, followed by lamp lighting, coffee and some really good conversations.

It was great having them with us, sharing ideas, talking cars and business, and spending time with the team.

Group Shaman's Managing Director & Vice President of FADA - Amar Jatin Sheth, shared his insights on the newly notified CAFE III norms on CNBC-TV18. He discussed the implications of the new fuel-efficiency regulations, their impact on the automotive industry and the role of evolving technologies in shaping India’s automotive future. We are proud to see our Managing Director Amar Jatin Sheth represent the industry on a national platform.

The government has notified the third phase of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE III) norms for passenger vehicles. The new rules will come into effect from April 1, 2027 and remain in force until March 31, 2032.

CAFE III applies to new passenger vehicles manufactured or imported for sale in India. The norms aim to improve fuel efficiency and reduce average carbon emissions, with the fleet fuel-consumption benchmark tightening from nearly 4 litres per 100 km in 2027–28 to 3.33 litres by 2031–32, implying a 16.7% improvement in fuel efficiency by FY32.

Electric and hybrid vehicles will receive super credits, with battery EVs and range-extended EVs counting as three vehicles, plug-in hybrids as 2.5 and strong hybrids as 1.6 in fleet calculations.

The framework also expands recognised fuel-saving technologies from four to 12 and introduces a carbon neutrality factor for ethanol-blended petrol, biofuels and compressed biogas.

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has criticised the norms as “backward looking” and “status quoist”. We discuss the implications with Amit Bhatt, Hormazd Sorabjee and Amar Jatin Sheth on NewsCentre.
