Yesterday morning (on 7/7/2026), my beautiful mom passed away peacefully after a long and incredibly difficult journey with COPD.
My heart is broken... but underneath the heartbreak is an overwhelming sense of peace, knowing she is finally able to breathe with ease and kiss my dad.
For almost the last ten years, it has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to care for her. Love has many languages, and ours looked different than most. It looked like oxygen tubing, medications, doctor’s appointments, sleepless nights, advocating when she couldn’t, laughing whenever we could, holding her hand, and simply showing up... every single day.
For the last ten years, love looked like showing up.
It wasn’t always easy. There were days that stretched me beyond what I thought I could carry. There were moments that were exhausting, heartbreaking, frustrating, and incredibly beautiful all at the same time. And if I had the chance to do it all over again, my answer would still be the same...
Without hesitation.
She was my mom.
Thank you to everyone who has loved her, prayed for her, checked in on us, sent meals, cards, messages, or simply kept our family in your thoughts over these past several years. Every kindness mattered. Every prayer mattered. Every single one.
Right now, we’re holding one another a little tighter, remembering the woman who shaped our lives, and finding comfort in knowing she is finally at peace.
When the details for her homegoing service have been finalized, I’ll share them here.
Until then... if you think of my mom, I hope you’ll smile. And if you think of our family, we’d be grateful for your prayers as we learn what life looks like without her physical presence.
Love,
Shana 💜 #rip #groverwashingtonjr #mom #love #family by @grovernow

Remembering Grover Washington Jr's born day, today December 12th. His candle burned brightly until it didn't. It was extinguished far too soon.

I've written about Grover a lot of the years but here is the starter https://www.ctproduced.com/happy-born-day-grover-washington-jr/

I usually have something playing in the background while I work, and today a video came on about someone’s significant loss. It stirred up memories of my dad... thoughts swirling into the abyss I call my mind. I was 24 when he left for the jam session in the sky.
Then, out of nowhere, I jumped back to a conversation Al and I had last night about my upcoming 49th birthday. And suddenly, it hit me—I’m 48 right now, and my dad has been gone for half of my life. That realization shocked me.
When he passed, I didn’t know how I was going to survive, much less grow, learn, marry, and become a mom. But here I am... though I still miss him desperately, and that realization made my heart ache.
Grief is such a strange companion, isn’t it? Some days, it feels like it fades, and other days, it feels as fresh as ever. Today is one of those days. #groverwashingtonjr #groversdaughter #grief #griefjourney #rip #music #love #daddysgirl #jazz #smoothjazz #lullabyforshanably by @grovernow
