Ruth Asawa’s metal work consists primarily of ethereal, hand‑woven wire sculptures that transform industrial materials into floating drawings in space. Using brass, copper, iron, and steel like thread, she looped and tied wire into transparent, biomorphic forms that swell, contract, and sometimes contain smaller shapes within larger ones, so that inside and outside visually trade places. Suspended from the ceiling, her nets of metal cast intricate shadows that are as much a part of the work as the object itself, emphasizing lightness, movement, and negative space. Asawa developed her looping technique from basket makers in Mexico and later experimented with electroplating, allowing chemical processes to build rough, coral‑like skins over her wire armatures, further expanding the tactile and visual possibilities of metal.⁠ by @groverradstudio

Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s project Surrounded Islands transformed Miami’s Biscayne Bay in May 1983, when they encircled eleven small, man‑made islands with a vast expanse of floating pink fabric. The artists used millions of square feet of woven polypropylene, cut into custom patterns so the material hugged each irregular shoreline like a luminous, artificial shoreline of its own. Seen from bridges, boats, and planes, the islands appeared to float in glowing pink “halos,” turning neglected spoil heaps into temporary jewels and heightening viewers’ awareness of the bay’s ecology and urban setting. ⁠

As with all of their environmental works, the installation existed only for about two weeks. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s team removed the project with the same level of planning and labor that went into installing it. All visible components—millions of square feet of pink polypropylene, booms, and hardware—were taken off the water, and the materials were then sent for industrial recycling rather than discarded. Throughout the process, environmental monitors and agencies oversaw compliance with agreements that required the artists not only to restore the bay to its prior condition but, in effect, leave it cleaner than before, building on the roughly 40 tons of trash they had already removed from the islands during preparation.⁠ by @groverradstudio
