Elle was amazing! Miss this face. I can't believe it's been close to three years since she left except my heart knows. The world has changed for me. I've seen people talking about preparing for the passing of their Frenchies.

My only advice is to give grace to yourself. Grief alters the brain. If you've never lost a loved one this is different than losing a parent. Humans live much longer. We are our pups' voice in this world advocating for them. There are heavy choices.

Last weekend I was at a pop-up and this young woman told me she came home for the weekend from college because her pug had passed. She was trying to brush it off but I told her that grief is your's and it's real. There were hugs. I've had that happen a few times. If you are finding people shutting you down about it, leave and go for a walk. I used to leave the apartment at night for walks so I could cry in peace and visit Elle's favorite spots. Some people are grief bullies. They can't even consider your feelings because it makes them uncomfortable.

There's a loss of identity. Some people can't take it and adopt another soul immediately. That's not for me and I don't know that I'll ever feel ready. Don't let anyone push that "it's just a dog" nonsense, after all they are "just a human."

Preparing for grief you have never known is simply foreign to me no matter how many loved ones are gone. My Mum passed a month later and that was different than when my Dad died. Not having parents leaves a sense of being unmoored. I don't want other people to know that grief but the truth is we all go. I'm sending some love out to those of you facing hard decisions and those about to go into the first set of holidays without them.

Dear @je_suis_violet ,
You were barely four pounds when I met you. I was half asleep when I read the email from FBRN there was a puppy on Staten Island in dire need of emergency fostering, not in good shape.

You were a handful. I never knew where I was going to find you or what you'd have managed to get to - so small you climbed to the back of the book shelf. 🥹 However, once you settled in, you had no problem taking charge much to Elle's bewilderment. 😉.

Seven months later you went to a great home near Prospect Park. Perfect for a curious nature baby chasing leaves and making people smile.

Sending deepest condolences to your family @aquanasium & @goldhoops who gave you such an incredible life full of love and adventure.
