Two years ago we ordered the matching T-shirts, grilled by the pool and lit the sparklers. Some dogs hate the booms, but not my Bear - he spent his first Fourth of July in Riverside, our cute neighborhood inside of KC that was always full of fireworks. I’m the one that hated the booms the most 😅

I never posted the pics from that day, because Bear died the next morning. I’m still a little shocked by the suddenness. We’ll never know why he and Yuki died, and I miss him all the time.

I packed that shirt away and figured I would never wear it again. Such a bad memory that erased the good.

Maybe it was the T&T wedding extravaganza, but I decided I could wear it this year. Melinda too. It’s a few sizes too big now and I’m tucking it away for a TBD sewing project, but it feels good to honor his memory and laugh about the happy things.

Dogs aren’t with us long enough 🩷

I know there are much, much bigger worries in this world, so hopefully y’all will give some grace to your friend who has very mixed emotions about a weekend I’ve always loved too 🧨 🌭 🇺🇸

Thank you @mshogfan5 @alisaleard @izzyintheozarks_ @asilva479 for sharing the family farm with me and Roo this weekend, because she VERY MUCH cares about the boom booms. And more thanks for your friendship and great company. Love you all and our gaggle of silly dogs too.

I’ve agonized over what to say for almost two months now, and the right words never come. I lost my beautiful, sassy, brilliant Bear on July 5th, and it still feels like yesterday. It was a beautiful day, unseasonably cool, but both Bear and his bestie Yuki are gone.

No answers why after waiting for weeks, and I’ll just never know why he was taken from me, from us. I have an amazing community of people who loved my Bear, who helped with his training, who helped with his care when I had to go back to the office, who had us over for Sunday playdates where he would play on the pool stairs and beg to play with the water hose. And we all miss him terribly. I know I don’t feel all of this hurt by myself.

I’m feeling particularly sad today, finally at home after running nonstop the last several weeks. I’m listening to this song, which always gets me in the feels, and I’m staring out the window while contemplating a nap…even tho I finally got some decent sleep last night. I think this summer has finally caught up to me. It’s been a tough one, and an amazing one, and life is just life-ing. I have friends and family who have been through so much worse, are going through worse, and I try to keep some perspective.

But out the window, I see one of his balls under the holly. A blue chuck-it, my favorite kind, because those things are nearly indestructible. And the tears are like a punch to the gut.

I packed up everything the weekend he left me, with my parent’s help, knowing how hard it would be and wanting to feel all the hurt I possibly could at once. But here’s a ball that I missed. And I know he’s still with me.

Thank you to everyone who sent a kind note, beautiful flowers or the incredibly thoughtful gifts so I can remember him always. He was so, so loved and never knew a bad day in his too short life.

I started his quilt today, and I’ll always have him in my heart. Love you so much @grumpykermitface
