Liam Young will deliver the final lecture “New Planetary Imageries” for AAD Arguments on July 22nd, 2026.

Liam Young is an artist, director, and BAFTA-nominated producer who creates imaginary worlds as a way of thinking through the futures we fear, desire, and are already making. His visionary films and speculative landscapes act as rehearsals for the world to come, spaces capable of holding both our wildest aspirations and our most unsettling truths, where fiction becomes a tool for navigating the environmental urgencies of the present. Young also extends this worldbuilding practice across the film, television, and video games industries, crafting stories that remind us that the future is not a distant inevitability but an act of collective imagination.

Introduction and response by Lydia Kallipoliti, Michiel Helbig, Mahum Erkin, & AAD Students.

Deborah Lopez & Hadin Charbel, co-founders of Pareid will deliver the lecture “Climate F(r)ictions” for AAD Arguments on July 15th, 2026.

Deborah Lopez and Hadin Charbel are founders of Pareid, an interdisciplinary design and research studio whose work adopts approaches from various fields and contexts addressing topics related to climate, ecology, policy and storytelling through what they refer to as “Alternate Endings”. They are both Associate Professors at the Bartlett School of Architecture where their pedagogical interests focus on themes of ‘cli-migration’ and ‘autonomous ecologies’ at local and planetary scales. Using climate fiction as a vehicle, speculations are put forward through research-grounded narratives combining computational design, digital technologies, film and video games.

Their work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, the Tallinn Biennale, the Seoul Biennale, the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam, the Design Museum London, and others. They are the co-editors of “Monumental Wastelands”, a two-volume augmented and bi-lingual book exploring themes of Autonomy and Logistics, and guest editors for Materia Arquitectura Vol. 28 titled “Press Play”, exploring how architecture is being reshaped by play, simulation, and digital ecologies.

Mpho Matsipa will deliver the lecture “Black Counter-Cartographies As Architecture Mixed Tape” for AAD Arguments on July 8, 2026.

Mpho Matsipa is a South African-born design researcher, curator and urban theorist rooted in African design thinking across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean worlds. She practices curating as a form of public scholarship that explores African cities and diasporic creative practices as generative epistemological frameworks in architecture and urbanism. She is an Associate Professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London where she also serves as Co-Director of Spatial Justice. Mpho is a Loeb Fellow 2022 (Harvard Graduate School of Design), Prince Claus, Building Beyond Senior Fellow (2026) and she holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. She has curated several exhibitions, discursive platforms and experimental architectural research platforms. She is working on an Architecture Mixed Tape in collaboration with Chimurenga, for which she divides her time between Johannesburg, London, Lagos and New York.

Summer faculty highlight: Leonid Slonimsky of KOSMOS Architects | Advanced Architectural Design (AAD) Studio

KOSMOS Architects, founded by Leonid Slonimsky ‘11 MSAAD and Artem Kitaev, is an experimental architectural practice that collaborates virtually across borders. The work of KOSMOS encompasses urban, architectural, interior and object design, as well as research and art installations, addressing environmental and social challenges. Through experimentation with materials and construction techniques, the practice explores the spatial and visual parameters of architecture to define its contemporary meaning at the intersection of material and immaterial realms.

This semester, Slonimsky is teaching NEVER PERMANENT (AAD Studio). This studio “explores the transformations of obsolete architectural typologies — particularly commercial centers/malls — into contemporary living environments through the reuse of existing material and spatial resources.” taken in Columbia GSAPP by @gsapp_aad

Scenes from SYMPHONY OF FERMENTATION, an edible installation by the MS Advanced Architectural Design program students including, Nicole Kertznus, Hyeseong Kim, Sungjik Kim, and Meng-Syun Sung, in collaboration with Miguel Gallego (MFA 2026).

During fermentation, microorganisms grow, shift in size, and form colonies, constructing hidden architectures within food. As they multiply, they generate subtle vibrations and frequencies that overlap and resonate, producing a continuous field of acoustic activity. Symphony of Fermentation brings these processes into perception. Through a series of transscalar installations, microbial activity is translated into a layered sonic environment where recorded and live inputs intersect. Simple mechanical listening devices, inspired by automata, amplify and mediate these signals, allowing visitors to engage with biological processes that are otherwise imperceptible.

David Gissen (Yale University) will deliver the lecture “Anti-Eugenic City” for AAD Arguments on June 24, 2026.

David Gissen is a historian, designer, and theorist of architecture. He studies how physiological and environmental ideas are embedded in modern and late-modern architecture and design. He is the author of four books, including The Architecture of Disability: Buildings, Cities, and Landscapes beyond Access (University of Minnesota Press, 2023) and Subnature: Architecture’s Other Environments (Princeton Architectural Press 2009). Gissen has also published numerous essays for journals, magazines, books, and exhibition catalogs.

His architectural and urban proposals have been exhibited at the Venice Biennial, Victoria and Albert Museum, and The Canadian Centre for Architecture, among other venues. He is the inaugural Class of 1972 Professor of Architecture at the Yale School of Architecture and the Director of the School’s PhD program. He has held additional academic appointments at The New School, Columbia University GSAPP, MIT, The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and the California College of the Arts.

Introduction and response by Isabelle Tan, Lydia Kallipoliti, & AAD students.

AFTER VESSEL explores the acceleration of contemporary image culture and the resulting mutations of materiality in a post-digital era. Through this analysis, the project argues that the Vessel is more than just a building; it is deeply connected to larger systems shaped by social media, digital technology, and new modes of generating value and meaning.

Using existing data sources, scraped images, models and maps, the video both reveals the footprint of the Vessel in contemporary media ecologies, and highlights broader architectural shifts it exemplifies, namely the transformations of crucial notions of locality, temporality, materiality, value and place.

The project questions what happens when architecture is experienced mainly as an image, and when public spaces are influenced by evolving ideas of value, memory, materiality and locality. By using mutation as a thoughtful approach and searching for new possibilities, the project aims to help architecture find more meaningful roles in an age shaped by after-images and appearances.

Leonid Slonimskiy & Artem Kitaev (KOSMOS) will deliver the lecture“Never Permanent” in AAD Arguments on June 17th, 2026.

KOSMOS is an architectural practice with offices in Zürich, Graz, and virtually across borders. Their work encompasses urban, architectural, and object design, as well as research and art installation. Through experimentation with materials and construction techniques, KOSMOS explores the spatial and visual parameters of architecture to define its contemporary meaning and to consider the architect as a curator of spaces and materials in time. KOSMOS explores the relationship between architecture and temporality: the ways buildings and their elements can be continuously adapted and reinterpreted to meet evolving needs.

Their design work and research have been published and exhibited widely, including the Venice Architecture Biennale, Triennale di Milano, Sao Paulo Biennale, and the Swiss Architecture Museum. Their accolades include the Prix de Geneve for Experimental Architecture, Pro Helvetia Prize, and nomination for the Swiss Art and Design Awards.
