Quick trip to the Music City to see Cooper in his uniform for the first time. Had some time at first base and an at bat. Got that first strike out of his career taking care of.
😂
Next trip to Knoxville next Friday. I’m sure the colors in the Smoky Mountains will be yucky. Will have some reports from the road coming soon! 🍁 🍂 🐻 taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @gshrum2

Today started off on the deck, coffee in hand. Sent Kara a picture of me enjoying the morning. Not to rub it in, but to remind her that in 7 1/2 months, she’ll be joining me. 😊

Shared a story on my facebook and instagram this morning and it really hit me.

If you haven’t watched Reacher, I highly recommend it. Without giving anything away, judging by his appearance, he had just been through the ringer. All stitched up and exhausted. That scene was a mirror of the opening scene. Now all beaten up from helping with one task, he was already moving on to the next. He doesn’t seek fanfare or notoriety. He just does what needs to be done to help people he doesn’t even know.

For some reason, that hit me pretty hard.

It brought back a memory of a trip my dad and I made to Hannibal one day. We stopped by his old elementary school. Dad used to tell the story about how, when he was little, he decided he did not want to be at school anymore and would run out of building and head home. Grandma Margery would have to bring him back. 😂

Eventually, she told him that if he did it again, she’d tan his backside with a willow branch! 😂 Scared him so badly that he never missed another day of school from that point until he retired in 1998.

But here’s the part I’ll never forget.

That day in Hannibal, Dad had stopped at his old elementary school to take care of the lunch accounts of any students who owed money. I asked him how often he would do something like that.

His answer was simple.

“Whenever they need me to.”

I miss him.

Those five words say a lot about the man he was. He didn’t need recognition, a pat on the back, or anybody to know what he was doing. If somebody needed help and he could do something about it, he did.

I know he’d be proud of his sons, granddaughters, grandsons, and daughters-in-law. They’re all good people who would give the clothes off their backs to help somebody else.

Maybe that’s the real legacy he left us. Not what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we’re willing to do for others when they need us.

Think I need to reach out to that school. ❤️ by @gshrum2

Nothing major to report today. Did hoof it a total of 5 miles between Knox walks and mowing the grass.

Mentioned to Kara, “Think I would like to buy a telescope.” Her response, “Are you my little space nerd?” I guess stuff related to anything outside of our Exosphere Kara considers “nerdy stuff”. Has nothing to do with dudes with pointy ears or little green wizard boys waving around their light sticks…I just want to see the rings of Saturn…Just thought that would be neat. I’ll show her. I’m gonna get a telescope and she’s not going to be able to use it!

Oh good the dodgers won again today. Great job with a payroll of a trillion 😒
What’s more impressive is the Vikings are 4-0 without scoring a touchdown yet. So take that stupid dodgers by @gshrum2

Exciting weekend watching our favorite daughter playing some softball! Followed up her game with a stop by Boulevard Brewing for a refreshing adult beverage before heading to Ponak’s for a burrito the size of my head. I showed that delicious, pork-filled El Hefe who was boss! 😂

Biggest accomplishment of the weekend, however, was my successful trip to Walmart.

You’re probably thinking, “George, how hard could that be?”

Well, as I headed out the door, I asked Kara if she needed anything, to which she replied, “Nope, I’m good!”

Away I went!

As I was getting the things on the list, I get a text from Kara: “Could you pick this up for me please?”

Well, I looked at the photo and I couldn’t even pronounce the product. It did say what aisle it would be in, but there was one little problem…that information was for a different store! 😂

She knew I was going to the State Line store and gave me aisle information for the Raymore store.

I said to myself, “George, this is a test!”

I looked and looked and looked. No Kitsch Air Dry Cream with Castor Oil anywhere to be found. 😩

But I locked in.

I thought, “There is a Target right across the street. I’m definitely coming home with this product!”

So I went to Target, walked right up to this Kitsch, and SUCCESS!! 😂😂😂

When I arrived home, I proudly informed Kara that I had found her hair care treatment.

Her response?

“Oh, you found it?!?”

Girl… I WIN THIS ROUND. 😂

Cannot wait for my next challenge. 😊 by @gshrum2

Another Friday night not being at a football game. 😂
Knox and i had a spirited walk this morning! I guess after a couple inches of rain all of the dog piss gets washed off the trail! Not a lot of stopping to sniff stuff today!

Started cleaning out the garage today. That’s all I have to say about that….

Besides my trusty Sous chef Mr Knoxville I had some extra help in the kitchen tonight! Kara Thulin Shrum made her infamous baked sweet potatoes! Little butta, cinnamon n sugar. Hot honey is a game changer for sure! For my part I put together some cute little meatloaf balls. Mighty Tasty! by @gshrum2

We are like the U.S. Postal Service around here. Rain, snow, sleet, hail… Knox will NOT allow a day off! 😂 Waited until it was a light drizzle the hit the trail!

Started consolidating a lot of boxes in storage today. Looks like that’s going to be my big project for the fall. Retirement… where you finally have time to organize all the stuff you didn’t have time to organize while you were working. 😂

Little Southern dining tonight. Kara is getting after some red beans and rice. Of course, we’re hitting it with the Holy Trinity and some rotisserie chicken. 😊

Main protein will be some fried catfish with that Louisiana Cajun fish fry. A side will be Sam’s loaded potato salad, on the recommendation of Chase Nugen. That will do pig! Mighty tasty!

And a little video of Cooper from the last scrimmage. The Command is really starting to lock in. 🧡⚾️ by @gshrum2

Daily Retirement Update — Day ??? 😂 Oh ya! trash and laundry day! Got both accomplished today!!

Another big day in retirement, and once again I’ve accomplished absolutely nothing that would qualify as a job… and I’m getting pretty good at it.

After Knox and I hit the Cleveland Lake trails I headed on to Walmart, where I encountered something I wasn’t prepared for…

Slow-moving raisins. 😂

Going to Walmart during a weekday has it’s advantages, but sometimes the pace of play is not to quick. I’m not saying I’m becoming a raisin, but I did spend an embarrassing amount of time wandering around Walmart today, so the transformation may have already started.

Halloween decorations are starting to appear around the house. Meanwhile, Knox was apparently having a an issue with the witch, and at some point decided yelling at Jovie was the appropriate way to handle the situation. Nothing says peaceful retirement like a household full of yelling. 😂

Dinner tonight was BBQ chicken pizza. As Beth Sabers knows you can do a lot of things with a rotisserie chicken! Chef-Boi-R-G got that thin layer of cream cheese as that base. Oh and you gotta use red onion, you got to!

And then the big news of the day for the baseball family: Tennessee released the 2027 baseball schedule today. Cooper and the Vols open the season at home in February, and the SEC schedule includes Oklahoma at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, a trip to Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Vanderbilt and several other big-time matchups. The Vols will play 38 of their 56 regular-season games at home. Can’t wait for those road trips! Anxious to see how many different ways you can do grits 😊

So, all in all, another productive day in retirement.

Words of wisdom from George:
“Life is short. Eat the pizza, ignore the raisins, and if you find yourself yelling at somebody named Jovie… just go take a nap. You’re probably tired.” 😂🍕🍇🧡 by @gshrum2

Reminder! Tomorrow is trash day, George! 😂 Wouldn’t think two people could fill up a trash bin in two weeks, but we sure did! Thank goodness the weather has been cooler the last few days. Finally starting to feel like fall!

Kara has her fall pillows and pumpkin decorations out, so the house is looking all festive. With the weather changing, Knox and I are walking 2–3 times a day now. It was starting to look like an episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor around here. I would sleep, I would wake, I would walk, I would sleep. 😂 I would highly recommend that show on Netflix this Halloween season!

Met a nice doggie named Charlie on the trail yesterday. Knox is what you would call a social butterfly. He loves the little kids and seems to think everybody is his friend. 🐶

Got the lawn mowed today. Figured since it is cooler I would take that off of Kara’s plate. I don’t want to do it to much as to not have her in shape enough for snow shoveling season. You know we are just about a month out from that happening and I’m hearing that El Niño out in the Pacific is going to be a rascal this winter.

Tonight’s dinner was another one of Chef Boi-R-G’s creations. 👨‍🍳

Shrimp and asparagus sautéed up with garlic and Rotel, all swimming together in a nice, creamy sauce.

Remember folks, retirement is all about finding your purpose… mine apparently involves garlic and heavy cream. by @gshrum2

Well apparently Knox was onto something last night when he was barking at Kara in the kitchen. If you recall from last nights post Kara was making her chocolate chip cookies. Discussion last night was these cookies just don’t taste right. What Kara didn’t realize until this morning was she forgot to put sugar into them…..😂😂😂😂. Knox has become such a reliable Sous chef for me that he was telling Kara “hey lady you forgot the sugar!!” Here is the post from last night and an additional video of Knox in action today!
Enjoy! by @gshrum2
