Where it all began. 1982 Pontiac Trans Am.

305ci V8, Cross-Fire fuel injection. 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 350C w/ lock-up torque converter. Flowmaster exhaust, hollowed out catalytic converter. Fiberglass cowl-induction hood, Cragar chromed-out 5-Stars. T-tops for the win.

It was the Knight Rider car. Same interior. Same year. The car was slow, heavy and loud.

I was gifted this car by my Godfather in Astoria Queens. He ran it into the ground. Had to tow it two hours to my parents home in PA where it sat for months.

Finally, my dad stoked the biggest check I ever saw him write. $750 for a reman engine block at PepBoys. Over the course of 4 years, from ages 16-20, and over 7 grand of my own hard-earned money, I rebuilt every part and system of this car you can name with my own hands, transmission included with the help of my Uncle who owned a trans shop in Northern NJ. I learned how everything in a car works. I pulled more parts from the muddy grounds of local junk yards and busted up Firebirds and Cameros than I can possibly count.

The experience landed me a job behind a parts counter for 7 years between PA and MD. I owe most of what I know about fixing and working on cars to this car, my father, my Godfather and the hard working full time techs in and around Eastern PA.

There was no internet. Only Hayes and Chilton manuals. And when those books would often fail you, it was the local garages where I would walk into the service areas middle of peak hours and talk to the techs to leech their hard-earned knowledge. They were always glad to help a hungry kid. I’m thankful for them. The way they spoke, the smell of the shop floors, classic rock blaring, the pin-up girls on the wall, cigarette smoke, and learning first-hand have no comparison to AI or Google search.

Sold the Trans Am for about 3 grand. Never looked back. Was happy to move on and get half the money I spent on her back out. Went Japanese from there. Another story for another time.

1977 911 S. Grew up in middle America with the car pictured here in the garage. Dad was pretty wild on the brand and platform. His first car was a Bermuda Orange 912. This was his first and last 911.

Used to sneak it out every chance I would get. But I was careful with it. The factory 2.7L stuck a piston and blew to pieces. Never saw so much metal in an oil change.

He went out and found a 3.2L from an ‘85 Carrera. Receipt read 5k. Aside from the engine swap, he wrenched on this car in the garage himself. Over time, he brought the interior livery - factory cork color - up to fully restored. And had the whole car repainted to factory Arctic White.

The car flat out ripped. Could easily scare the piss out of you. I’d say it was safely as fast as a MKV GTI with what felt like equal torque. Only it was NA; the epitome of what they now call “raw.” Back then it was just considered loud and racey. You had to be a certain kind of gal to jump in the passenger seat, let alone own or drive one. My mom was all about it.

He sold the car after getting older and being less able to work the manual trans. Fast-forward to 2021 and Dad’s ‘77 911 S ends up on Rennlist done up as seen in the first two shots. A “hot rod” 911 they call it. It was NOT a Carrera. And those wheels were not what my dad had bolted on. The last photo is the car in transition to a hot rod look. This is closest to what I remember it as.

I can still vividly recall what it sounded and felt like to start up and drive. Still have the VIN. Might track it down. ✨💕🤘
