We kept a calm pace through the fog until the lake opened up flat and black, good enough for a night. I was ready to set my camp, Deathwing drinking slow..

and that's when I saw it: a bump in the dirt that wasn't supposed to be there, too square to be nature's work..

.. that old outlaw instinct itching..

got on my knees and put my shovel to work.. wood hit, then iron.

A chest, half-rotted but heavy with old but honest valuables..

Finally, something that wasn't blood or bad news..

I looked at Deathwing, Deathwing looked back.. no words, just that quiet understanding between two tired bastards who've waited too long for a break.

I threw the chest over the saddle. This ride might just be paying off after all..

Only the moon and Deathwing's little lamp to cut the fog..

The bridge ahead was all rot and rust, groaning under every hoof like it was deciding whether lo let us live..

..but down there.. river running black and quiet, smell of pine, old rocks that've seen it all and didn't care. peaceful enough to make a man to stay.

..and I almost did.. then I remembered peace has to be earned.

I nudged Deathwing on.

Night fell, fog so thick you could chew it, just me and Deathwing cutting through that white nothing.

and the wolves..

You dont see them at first, you hear that low chorus out in the brush.

..patient.. polite almost.

Like they are setting the table and you are the guest of honor..

I kept one hand on the reins and one near iron, not because I was scared.. but because fear is a luxury you cant afford when you are the only warm thing for miles..

The world felt empty in that way that makes a man talk to his horse just to hear something that ain’t hungry..

Then through the fog, nailed to a post should’ve fallen ten years ago, a wooden arrow: Emerald Ranch. Letters faded, but familiar enough to hit like a name from a wanted poster you thought they’d stopped printing.

..finally, a familiar name in an unfamiliar dark.

I nudged Deathwing forward.. we’ll see how it goes, old boy..

I left Armadillo with dust still stuck in my teeth and a stupid hope in my chest that maybe quiet was a place you could ride to..

Deathwing moved slow under me, old bones carrying old bones..

Off the trail, a camp that wasn’t a camp no more, just canvas ripped open like a gutted deer and two bodies face down in the dirt, pockets turned inside out..

some bastards idea of honest work.

same damn story, different zip code..

I stood there with my hand on Deathwing’s neck, staring at those empty hands reaching for nothing.. and that old familiar weight settled back in my chest. That feeling like peace is just a word rich folks invented to sell land.. the country don’t want peace but debt paid in lead and leather.

If I wanted a place to finally settle, I reckoned, I’d have to crave it out myself..

..and craving takes work..

The dust hadn't settled since I hit Armadillo, it just learned to live in my lungs..

This place was exactly what they said it was: a town coughing itself to death, too stubborn to lay down..

..too much like me.

I didn't look back at the piano, at the blood I didn't spill but didn't stop either.

"Blackwater," I muttered, not to the horse, but to whatever was left listening.

It was a long ride north through Thieves' Landing, the kind of ride where a man either finds a reason to keep going..

.. or finally finds a good enough place to stop.
