I am so grateful for this night. This healing and sacred time with my children – the opportunity to show numero Uno, the community of dreamers and activists he was born into, the opportunity to witness the undying love we have for our people, our children, for true justice. The opportunity to feel into our creativity and power to dismantle harmful structures. Incarceration has been a major theme in my lineage. It’s caused so much pain and destruction. Feels so damn good to be among folks who haven’t let it break them. Folks working tirelessly to dismantle its punk bitch ass. Happy birthday @ellabakercenter you are a beacon and a pillar. After three long and very full months of summmmma: new experiences, communities and friends, a much slower pace, nervous system reset, joyful time in nature, precious time with cousins, Nas starts the first grade and we are BOTH ripe with all the feels🌻🍯👑 He is excited to see friends annnnnd uneasy about the long days away from home. I was awake all night worried about the many details and the larger picture of it all. After dropping him off this morning I was flooded with the weight of what it means to be in school. For him – his young spirit- forced separation, forced to be in the presence and energy of so many people all day, forced to sit still longer than he wants and to hold attention longer than he can… Me, the life experience of never feeling good at school – the life experience of watching my older son’s love for learning under constant and persistent attack as he was forced to endure this project we call schooling. I absolutely love Nasir’s school, I love his teacher. And I must acknowledge the weight of this moment and what it means for me and my family. My prayer is that he go to college, directly, happily and easily. I believe he will experience a happier and healthier life if that is his path. IM sitting with what that prayer means for this moment (I have a way of oversignifying a thing.) How do I place importance without applying pressure. And what does this mean for our daily lives?
