Alternative Space LOOP invites you to the opening of Minja Gu’s solo exhibition, 𝙈𝙞𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙: (𝙄𝙢)𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙆𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙣, on October 16 (Fri), 2026, at 5pm. The opening features two kinds of cookies made by Amal of Baraka Community Library, and drinks prepared by Gu. These are part of the work with recipes adapted to different dietary restrictions, opening a conversation on what and how we can eat together.

as part of 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅: (𝒊𝒎)𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒏, the artist 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚 𝐠𝐮 invites a special guest to the project to explore overlapping food rules and taboos, and imagine what can be cooked within them. guided through these conditions by the artist, the invited participant looks for a dish that fits—whether by adapting a recipe, finding one that already works, or developing something new. the process unfolds through cooking, conversation, and sharing food.

this time, 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 @sittishouse joins 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 at gmtc! 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 shares palestinian food and culture through traditional recipes, cooking practices, family memories, storytelling, and communal meals. starting with a dish brought by 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞, we will explore what remains and what changes when a familiar recipe encounters an unfamiliar set of rules.

drawing from her ongoing research 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅: (𝒊𝒎)𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒏, 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚 𝐠𝐮 brings a meal for everyone to the table in this lecture performance.

thinking together about food rules and taboos across different religions, cultures, times, and communities, participants explore how people have defined what can be eaten and what cannot.

𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚 weaves her research with shared personal stories, serving dishes prepared with ingredients and methods to navigate these diverse dietary boundaries. each course is served in custom ceramic vessels sculpted by the artist that resemble human body parts and organs, carefully paired with specific foods.

the goal is to create “food that anyone can eat”—but is food for everyone truly possible? come to the table, eat together, and join the conversation to explore what remains, what disappears, and what kind of 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 emerges when different people share a meal.

<100〉 is a project consisting of 100 independent sentences extracted from Albert Camus’s novel The Stranger, carefully chosen so that no single sentence specifies any character, place, or situation. Stripped of their original narrative, these sentences are printed on individual cards to form a single deck.

A group of people sits around, shuffles the deck, and takes turns playing a card while reading its sentence aloud. The order of the sentences is newly created every time; words that once had no relation fortuitously connect with the preceding and following sentences, flowing like a conversation or a monologue. Though it never becomes entirely clear who is speaking to whom, or where and what is happening, unexpected relationships and situations continuously emerge between the fragmented sentences as the reading goes on.

This work was first shown at ‘Once is Not Enough’ in audiovisual pavillion, in 2014, and the table was made at that time as well.

Seonggyu Maeng, 〈Magpie Symbol Archive〉, 2017 | Text on a wooden batten | 230×195×25cm

🐒 gmtc presents
𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅: (𝒊𝒎)𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒏

𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚 𝐠𝐮
09.01-09.30.2026

what we choose to eat–or not to eat–is never just a matter of personal taste. shaped by religion, culture, family, and community, the boundaries of what we can eat, cannot eat, and what we consider “food,” are constantly negotiated.

𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅: (𝒊𝒎)𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒏 is a project that brings together and overlaps different food rules, taboos, and personal experiences in one place. throughout september, artist 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚 𝐠𝐮 transforms gmtc into a temporary kitchen, studio, archive, and meeting place to put these questions to the table.

each exchange becomes ingredients for the next encounter. through workshops, collaborations, performances, and, of course, ongoing cooking and conversation, the project aims to gather stories, adapt recipes, and share meals. we invite you to share your story, bring recipes to adapt together, or join us in exploring the possibilities, impossibilities, and “𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅” of eating together.

keep swiping for a few questions from 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚.

this september, we look forward to meeting, talking, cooking, and gathering around the table with you at gmtc.

Happy Easter holidays to those who celebrate 🌿🥚 Today we share the wok 𝘌𝘎𝘎𝘎𝘚, 2020, by Minja Gu (@gugookukoo).

The installation is part of the artist’s ongoing project 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰 (2015–), in which everyday organic remnants are collected, dried, and recontextualized. Through repetition and classification, Gu transforms processes of decay into forms of display. Eggs that are usually associated with life, cycles, and renewal, are presented here in a state between consumption and contemplation, turning an object of utility into a moment of pause.
