🏴‍☠️ Why does Pirates of the Caribbean start with a drop at Disneyland?
It’s not just for thrills. It’s Imagineering genius.
Most rides save the drop for the end, but Pirates does the opposite. Here’s why:
Pirates of the Caribbean was supposed to be a walkthrough wax museum in a basement. Then the 1964 World’s Fair happened. Imagineers proved audio-animatronics could work and saw “it’s a small world” move 3,000 guests per hour: six times what a walkthrough could handle.
Suddenly, Pirates became a massive boat ride with over 100 animatronics. The problem? While Walt and the Imagineers’ ambitions got bigger, Disneyland didn’t.
They ran out of space inside the railroad berm for the entire attraction. So they built a second show building, beyond the railroad.
But how do you get boats under a railroad?
You drop them. Way down. Those drops at the beginning get you low enough to float under the train tracks. As Imagineer Bob Gurr explained, “most guests are unaware that hundreds of tons of water are right over their heads” while passing through the lower scenes.
You actually travel under the railroad twice: once before the ship battle, and again after the jail scene
Those drops in the dark? They’re hiding one of Disney’s most ingenious engineering solutions: traveling underground, beneath a working railroad, to reach a massive building most guests never even notice exists.
Would you have guessed Pirates goes under the railroad? ⚓

👀 How Disney World hides Cosmic Rewind in plain sight

Disney used a psychological trick to hide one of the BIGGEST ride buildings in the world. Most guests never notice it. And they do it all the time.

How did Disney do that?

You know the iconic Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind building, with the cool retro sci-fi aesthetic? That’s just the line. The roller coaster is actually inside a massive show building. It’s so big you could fit FOUR Spaceship Earths inside (by volume). That’s because Cosmic Rewind is longest indoor roller coasters in the world, at over 5,500 feet of coaster track.

So it has one of the biggest show buildings at Disney World. But I almost never notice it from inside EPCOT. Why? Because Imagineering painted it in “Blending Blue” and “Go Away Green” - special colors designed to make things disappear into the background.

These are proprietary colors Disney invented specifically to not be noticed.

Once you know, you can’t unsee it… but inside the park, it really does work.

Do you think Disney did a good job hiding this giant coaster building? Or is it too big to disguise?

🚀 One of Disney’s best hidden effects: How the Millennium Falcon ride works!

Welcome to How Did Disney Do That, a new series of videos where I go behind the scenes on the best magic tricks at Disney Parks.

Walt Disney Imagineering pulled off a pretty great magic trick with Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run at Disney World and Disneyland: Convincing you that you are entering the one and only Millennium Falcon cockpit. The cabin had to be small enough to look like the one from Star Wars, but as a theme park ride, Disney needed to build a lot of cockpits so plenty of people can get on the ride.

The solution is genius.

WDI designed the line and the preshow to divide guests into smaller groups, bringing them to 6 different loading stations hidden from each other. But the best part is that the ride is actually on a turntable. There are four turntables, each with 7 simulators and dome screens. This allows for the ride to load and unload while guests go on their adventure through Hyperspace. And there are clever optional sequences built in that can make the ride go longer in case loading or unloading another simulator takes more time.

This hidden effect is just one of the reasons I love the Millennium Falcon ride.

What Disney World or Disneyland effect should I dive deep on next?!

🚢 Everything NEW on the Disney Believe, and where it will be the same as the other Wish class ships.
3 of the four bars on the Believe are new:
The Snow White themed Wishing Well is the center lounge, where the Bayou is on the Wish.
The pub is called Skygazers, with an astronomy theme and a whole new menu.
And the piano bar is Sea Notes, inspired by The Little Mermaid.
The multilevel entertainment hub is the Zootopia themed Gazelle, where Saga and Luna are on the other ships. The Deck 4 coffee shop is Cafe Kakamora, and Big Hero Sips is on Deck 5.
The new stage show is Encanto, the first ever stage adaptation of the film, which Disney says will stay true to the movie and the original music. Tangled is also getting an all new staging. It’s the same show as the one on the Magic, but with new sets, effects, and visuals.
The new restaurant is Oaken’s Table, a Frozen dinner show. But it’s not just Arendelle on the Wish reheated. The show and the vibe promise to be very different, like a rowdy party vibe. Also, Mickey’s Festival of Foods is getting an added station: Pluto’s Pita Platters. All the other food will still be there.
Now, what’s coming back from other Wish class ships?
Haunted Mansion Parlor, but I’m expecting a new menu.
Joyful Sweets, although now with Inside Out 2 characters and all new treats, which I got to try. The Anxiety Oreo is really good, like a creamsicle.
Also returning: AquaMouse (with the same 3 stories in rotation), 1923, Worlds of Marvel (with the Groot remix show), Marceline Market, Palo, Enchanté, The Rose, Seas the Adventure, the Sail Away Party, Pirates Rockin’ Parlay Party, and the Toy Story Splash Pad and Slideasaurus Rex, which is very important to my 5 year old son.
So very much a Wish class ship, but with a lot that’s new.
What are you most excited to see on this ship? Let me know! ⚓

🚢👀 What Disney DIDN’T announce on stage about the Believe.

I just learned five details straight from Disney that have me even more excited about their next cruise ship, especially how the new Frozen dinner show is different than Disney Cruise Line’s previous one.

First, the Grand Hall. Disney compared it to Aulani, especially the design of the proscenium and the Polynesian influences throughout. The carpet will have a bioluminescent feel, like Moana’s oar lighting up in the water. And there will be fiber-optic constellations on the ceiling, like Maui’s hook or Gramma Tala’s manta ray, which will activate at specific moments.

Second, the Believe will have interactive character moments like they do on the Destiny. The first confirmed one is a meet-and-play where families work with Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps to crack clues and solve a case in Gazelle, the multilevel lounge in the spot where Saga and Luna are. Disney also teased that the Grand Hall will host big character story moments, similar to the Destiny where Loki takes over the ship.

Third, an adults-only comedy show is in development in Gazelle, similar to With Great Power and Choose Wisely, but Disney said this new show should have even broader appeal for Disney fans.

Fourth, during the reveal livestream, Disney didn’t mention the new addition to Mickey’s Festival of Foods: Pluto’s Pita Platters. It’s exclusive to the Believe, with a menu similar to Cosmic Kebabs on the Adventure. And good news: it’s not replacing anything. Mickey’s BBQ currently takes up two windows. Pluto will take the left-hand side.

Fifth, Oaken’s Table is not just a reheated version of Arendelle, the Frozen dinner show on the Wish. Disney described Oaken’s Table to me as the opposite of Arendelle in terms of vibe. Instead of a royal engagement party, Oaken’s Table is a rowdy party in the Scandinavian forest with pop punk covers. It sounds like they’re taking the comedy and crowd interaction moments from Arendelle and running wild in that direction.

Do you have any questions about the Believe? Let me know. 🧊

Our first Disney Believe Clue today. 🏠✨🦋

We had to piece together Bruno’s vision from Encanto! Harder than Mirabel made it look in the movie.

Let’s see what else there is to find on the island today.

OK, a crazy Disney Believe prediction before I chase more clues on Castaway Cay.
I’ve been chasing clues about Disney Cruise Line’s next cruise ship, the Believe. And I’ve been trying to puzzle out where Inside Out 2 and Monsters Inc. will fit on the ship. So here’s my crazy theory: what if they fit in the same venue?
My prediction is that Worlds of Marvel will be replaced by a Worlds of Pixar restaurant with an inside out show and a Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor show. What do you think of this theory?
We’ll find out more later today! Stay tuned. #DisneyBelieveReveal #DisneyBelieve #DisneyCruiseLine #Pixar taken in Castaway Cay by @guide2disney

Late night Believe predictions!
I’ve just spent the last 48 hours chasing clues across the Disney Wish to learn more about DCL’s next ship, the Disney Believe (launching late 2027).
We’ve had clues featuring Frozen, Little Mermaid, Tangled, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, Monsters Inc, Inside Out 2, Snow White, Peter Pan, Toy Story, and Moana.
My two most confident predictions: Little Mermaid at the Piano Bar, and Snuggly Duckling at the pub. I also feel strong about a Snow White lounge, probably the open location on Deck 3.
Everything else is up in the air. Encanto will have a big presence, but I’m torn between the stage show and the dinner show. Inside Out had a treat previewed. Frozen had a full clue trail that had us delivering ice to Oaken.
And I’m perplexed where Monsters Inc, Zootopia, and Big Hero 6 fit in.
But I also believe that tomorrow is going to be even more fun - more clues and then the big reveal.
What do you think is coming?

🐚 Disney’s first clues about the Disney Believe all point to a new lounge.
I’m on the Disney Wish for the Disney Believe reveal cruise, and as we set sail, Disney gave me a series of clues to decode across the ship. All of them pointed me in one direction: under the sea.
I followed the clues across midship, and they eventually led me to Nightingales, the piano bar here on the Wish. Waiting for me was a mystery, unnamed cocktail served in a seashell. Like, a real seashell. It’s supposed to evoke the ocean through its flavors and ingredients, down to the sea salt.
And all the clues had to do with The Little Mermaid.
So here’s my prediction: the Disney Believe is getting a Little Mermaid lounge, and possibly a Little Mermaid piano lounge in the spot where Nightingale’s is.
But I’m not entirely sure. There are lots of possibilities here, and this could just as easily point to a Little Mermaid dining venue. I’m pretty sure it’s Little Mermaid in one of the lounges or restaurants, but nothing is locked.
The big reveal is Wednesday, and I’ll be decoding every clue until then.
What’s your theory? Little Mermaid lounge, dining venue, or something else entirely? Let me know! 🧜‍♀️

🚢🔍 Disney’s next cruise ship is a mystery at sea, and I need your help!

I have to solve puzzles to uncover what will be on Disney’s next cruise ship: The Believe.

I’m about to sail on the Disney Wish, where Disney’s actually hiding a trail of clues across the ship and Castaway Cay that point to what will be on the Believe.

I’m on the case: both as cruise line guest and on board detective. All will be revealed on a livestream on Oct 7, but let’s work to see if we can figure out what’s coming before then.

Because here’s the thing: Disney Cruise Line is a pattern company. The last three Wish-class ships all followed the same template. So we have a head start, but the real question is where the Believe breaks the template.

Here are the five major mysteries I’m looking out for, plus my predictions:

Mystery 1: The Broadway-style show. My guess: Encanto.
Mystery 2: The dinner show. So far it’s been Frozen, Coco, and Lion King. I think Moana’s the fit.
Mystery 3: The stateroom themes. Disney will use several IPs, but I’m putting Peter Pan in the tower suite.
Mystery 4: The four bars. DCL’s been raiding the parks here (Haunted Mansion Parlor, Cask & Cannon), so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for at least an Imagination lounge.
Mystery 5: Which pattern does the Believe break? I think this is the first Wish-class ship that drops Worlds of Marvel as a rotational restaurant.

This mystery is a glass onion, and knives will be out faster than the rush to get Mickey Churro Waffles at Marceline Market. (I wish I could promise that’s the last time I’ll channel my inner-Benoit Blanc voice here… but I know myself better.)

As I decode these clues, I’m gonna need your help: drop your predictions below, and I’ll bring the best guesses on board! 🕵️
