For the past few months I’ve been developing a series about the characters and stories of a roadside family restaurant in upstate New York. I’ve been exploring the possibilities of exclusively working small (from 8x10” to 12x16”) which has led me to a faster, more spontaneous approach. More soon

We are proud to present the oil painting “The Raid” (2025) by Guillermo Serrano Amat in “Exaltation,” our group exhibition exploring Mannerism today. There are only two days left to see the exhibition, closing this Saturday, August 23.

‘My approach is akin to the “Esperpento”, a literary movement that started at the dawn of the  20th century in Spain. Its founder, Valle-Inclán, defined it as a classical tragedy played by ridiculous and deformed heroes. Film noir cinema also feeds my imagination, along with the grotesque comic vision of R. Crumb. But as much as my characters seem perverse and distorted, my intention is never dismissive. I identify with these people; I believe in them.

In each painting, I create a film-like narrative world that retains consistency and specificity of detail. Lately, most are based on the light and social geography of Red Hook Brooklyn, a neighborhood I first discovered only two years ago, soon after moving to New York. By highlighting the grotesque and dismal aspects of daily life there, I delve into the passions that disjoint our quotidian experience. I believe it is in absurd moments that our deepest nature is most visible.’
