Freedom Nugget noun / ˈfriː.dəm nʌɡ.ɪt / The act of being rescued by Gumtree Greys, and your first taste of the good life. 👉 A Gumtree Greys tradition many years strong, and an essential component of the start of every new arrival’s journey to life as a well loved pet, the gift of Freedom Nuggets cannot be made possible without our foster carers, community volunteers, coordinators, and generous donors. 🧡 We can’t spell rescue without ‘U’! 🏷️ #GumtreeGreys #GreyhoundRescue #Greyhound #GreyhoundsOfMelbourne #RescueDog #RescueDogsOfMelbourne #RescuedNotRetired #CouchesNotCages #PetsNotBets #WinningHeartsNotRaces #AdoptDontShop #FreedomNuggetFund #FreedomNugs #FreedomNuggies by @gumtreegreys
At least 160 horses lost their lives as a result of racing in Australia during the 2025–26 racing season. This doesn’t capture the thousands of animals discarded by the racing industries every year, labelled as “wastage” once they’re no longer profitable, fast enough or fit to risk their lives for a flutter. Behind every statistic is an animal. A life. A heartbeat. A being who deserves so much more than to be treated as a commodity for human entertainment and gambling. Today, and every day, we stand in solidarity with our friends working tirelessly in racehorse rescue, rehabilitation and advocacy. The unpaid volunteers, rescuers and supporters who give these beautiful animals a chance at a life beyond the track. To everyone doing this work: we see you, we thank you, and we’re standing right alongside you 🧡 Please join us in saying #NupToTheCup. Support racehorse rescue and rehabilitation organisations however you can – donate, volunteer, foster, share their work or simply help raise awareness. Every action matters. Because horses and greyhounds deserve lives beyond the finish line. #GreyhoundRescue #EndTheRace #AnimalWelfare #HorsesAndHounds by @gumtreegreys

This Halloween, the scariest thing isn’t a haunted house. It’s the 48 greyhounds on our waitlist who are still waiting for their chance 🧡 Some have never slept on a soft bed. Some are still waiting to find out what love feels like. And some are puppies who may never know life outside a kennel. We can only bring more greyhounds into care when we have foster carers ready to open their homes. A foster home is where they can decompress, learn what life beyond racing looks like, and start their journey to a forever family. Could you open your home, and your heart, to a greyhound? 🙏 Here are some ways you can help: ✅ Apply to foster and give a greyhound their first real home ✅ If you aren’t in a position to foster at the moment, share this with as many people as you can ✅ Follow us, like our content, and help us reach new audiences! #FosterAGreyhound #GreyhoundRescue #FosteringSavesLives #AdoptDontShop #Halloween by @gumtreegreys

Yesterday was sweet foster Nora’s birthday🎂🎈 She got to spend her special day surrounded by love, with people making a fuss of her and reminding her just how precious she is. And while we’re so grateful she gets to experience these little joys in foster care, we can’t help but wish that by her next birthday, she’ll have a family of her very own to celebrate with. A family who wouldn’t dream of letting another birthday pass without making her feel like the most special girl in the world 🥹 A huge thank you to Nora’s wonderful foster family for giving her that love. For spoiling her, celebrating her, and showing her what life in a home can feel like. These moments might seem small, but for a greyhound waiting for her forever family, they mean everything. We’re forever grateful to the people who open their homes and hearts to make them possible 🧡 Our birthday wish for Nora? That this time next year, she won’t be waiting for a home. She’ll be celebrating in one 🏡✨ 🌏 Nora is in Melbourne, Victoria and is not available for interstate adoption 🎂 DOB 27/10/2019 🐱 Not suitable for homes with cats or other small animals 🍼 Suitable for children 6+ 💼 Suitable for working from home humans 🏡 Suitable for apartment living (with a balcony or area for toileting) [RE145276 | 956 000 006 670 578] #BirthdayGirl #AdoptDontShop #GreyhoundAdoption #RescueGreyhound #AdoptAGreyhound by @gumtreegreys

Plot twist: Jock’s been promoted to Brock, and he’s got a live-in life coach to show him the ropes 😎 Brock is a natural when it comes to relaxation. He’s already mastered the full roach on a fluffy bed, legs akimbo and cheeky sleepy grin on full display. When he’s not perfecting his couch potato credentials, he can be found keeping a careful eye on the rest of his housemates. It’s a tough gig but someone’s gotta do it! Luckily, he’s got the very best teacher in foster sister (and GG greyduate) Izzie, who’s been providing some in-home support and pet life education. Brock is taking his lessons VERY seriously (especially the ones involving snoozing and sunny spots). He’s mastered the art of leaning on his support system, quite literally 🥰 Brock is absolutely smashing life in foster care, and Izzie deserves a huge round-of-a-paws for her efforts 👏 Stay tuned for more Brock updates (and profile) as this good boy continues his education in the fine art of being a much loved pet 🧡 #GreyhoundsOfInstagram #AdoptDontShop #GreyhoundRescue #MelbourneDogs #FosterDog by @gumtreegreys
Meet Bella — Chief Caretaker of all Soft Household Items 🧸 An introvert at heart, sweet Bella prefers a quiet life: a cosy corner to nap, walks in nature, and a bed piled high with soft friends to look after. From her fluffy moose to giant cuddlepillar, her toys aren't for shredding — they're for carrying gently, cuddling close and napping on. Her favourites even come along on walks! An unapologetic thief, Bella will also "rescue" your jackets, shoes and jumpers, parading them proudly before curling up with them. She'll always swap them back for a soft toy. Shy with strangers, Bella is soft and affectionate once she knows you — resting her head on you for a scritch, snuggling when you get home, then snoozing nearby. She's perfect for movie nights and lazy weekends, less so the pub or the market. Bella loves zoomies and toy-tossing at home and would thrive with a yard. Busy streets can overwhelm her, so she prefers quiet parks. She's gentle with other dogs and may benefit from a calm canine buddy to help build her confidence. 🌏 Bella is in Melbourne, Victoria and is not available for interstate adoption 🎂 DOB 25/04/2023 🐱 Not suitable for homes with cats or other small animals 🍼 Suitable for children 12+ 🏡 Suitable for workers (can do 8 hours with access to a toilet) [RE145276 | 956 000 015 936 001] Got a quiet home and room on the couch for Bella and her entourage? She might just look after you too 🧡 #GumtreeGreys #AdoptBella #AdoptDontShop #GreyhoundLove #RescueGreyhound by @gumtreegreys
