As tradition goes, not going out the year without sharing my top 10 books of the year, in both non-fiction and fiction categories. A few books (some in audiobook) worthy of mentioning are shown in their own cover photos.

This year, all books were done in Apple devices, either via Kindle (reading) app or Libby (audio). Paper book now has receded to the things of past. With the convenience of reading (and listening) anywhere and anytime I have my mobile with me, it’s not only life enriching but also brain-injury sheltering from the increasingly intrusive social media bombardments.

Not against all social media but stay vigilant against the falsified and poisoned ones that have been so easily made with the ever increasing power of AI tools that avoiding them seems impossible. As Amy Webb’s book (“The Big Nine”) pointed out, the rapidly adoptions of AGI (Artificial Generative Intelligence, example: ChatGPT) the risk of humanity being replaced by ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) is no longer a sci-fi fiction as depicted in “The Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” but a reality that’s fast approaching.

This past year, though the stock market recovered nicely and inflation was tamed and coming down, the world witnessed other unthinkable humanitarian tragedies, the war in Ukraine saw no end in sight and then the October 7th atrocities by Hamas, and the subsequent Israel-Palestinian war that has potential to escalate to larger scale regional conflicts even the feared WWIII.

Reading these books keeps me from going insane and from losing hope for a better future while so much uncertainty and risks are facing our civilized world that at times seems going backward.

So, let’s read more and post less, stay healthy and vigilant, stay positive and hopeful, and wish you all a happy, healthy, peaceful, and prosperous 2024!

Just finished listening to this epic audiobook exactly 2 weeks after watching the movie “Oppenheimer” which was based on the book. Wished I had read this book first before going to the movie, then I would have comprehended and appreciated the movie even more.

It was a heart-broken ending for such a great man and scientist to die so early at 62. Certainly the Republican’s conservatism that geared more toward anti science and anti liberal thinking, just like it now, had influenced his mental and physical health negatively.

This why history is a must studied subject. Without learning the wrongs made in the past, we can’t make it right in the future. Be on the lookout for the rise of new McCarthyism!

Carry on my tradition of celebrating new year - sharing my Books of Year, top 10 in non-fiction, and top 10 in fiction, respectively. In the non-fiction list, you can clearly see that the current geopolitical events had influenced my choices.

To be honest, the 2022 really sucked - the unprovoked war in Ukraine, the stupidest Covid war in China, the runaway inflation, which was exacerbated by the aforementioned two wars, and Fed’s unprecedentedly consecutive interest hikes, that subsequently crushed the stock markets…

Reading sometimes help to gain some insights and perspectives on how things could be heading. Not feeling very optimistic about how the world would turn out in 2023, but still best wish for everyone to be healthy and happy, most importantly, be safe!

A zoomed-in view of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. (Seeing some other post this morning of the splendor reminded me of this one I took of the mosque back in August last year) - it is a Mosque too beautiful to put in words nor in pictures. You get to experience yourself (free admission) but just don’t go in summer - the heat outside prevents you from talking any good picture that need patience. #sheikhzayedmosque #abudhabi #dubai #grandmosque taken in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by @guobayang
