Unfolding emerged from my lived experience as a Sikh woman living between cultures, histories, and places. I reflect on hybridity, cultural translation, and the quiet negotiations of identity, home, and belonging. The woven forms evoke an umbilical cord—a thread of connection that stretches across generations, carrying memory, inheritance, and care. Even when distances grow, some ties continue to nourish us, reminding us that belonging is not fixed but continually woven through acts of translation and becoming.

Home is not a place I return to—it is something I continue to build. I shape “home” within the Third Space
as an ongoing process of becoming rather than a return to a singular origin. Each woven thread and mapped fragment becomes a gesture of care, translating experiences into a tactile language that holds identity, connection, and intergenerational belonging as an unfolding process.

ਤਾਣਾ-ਬਾਣਾ
While weaving 'Tana-Bana' I reflected on womanhood, family, and the invisible threads that connect generations of women. Thinking about daughters who become wives, mothers, and caregivers, I considered how women often carry relationships, memories, and responsibilities forward.

Working through my own menstrual cycle, the rhythms of the female body became part of the making process. I found myself thinking about the umbilical cord as a thread that is never truly severed—a lasting connection between mother and daughter. In many ways, the daughter becomes the thread that holds family stories, care, and belonging together.
'Tana-Bana' is a meditation on lineage, memory, and the enduring bonds woven through generations.

Behind the scenes
Nine metres of khaddar. Words printed like stains. Braids carrying memory. Laadliyaan is an act of healing, honouring the silences, griefs, and inheritances passed between generations of women.

Exhibited as part of Unfolding, my MFA Graduate Exhibition, alongside a body of work exploring memory, cultural translation, hybridity, and belonging through textile and material-based practices. Always Grateful to my supervisor & committee members.

Translations in Between: using cotton and wool threads, this is my second weaving project, capturing the moment the sky clears the chaos. The navy blue weft acts as memory, while the bright blue covers the turmoil—a now-distant experience that has long since been left behind.

"My existence feels contingent on survival; had my great-grandfather and grandfather not lived through the Partition of India in 1947, I would not be here. In this sense, I find myself drawn to the pre-partition map of Punjab, not only as geography but as memory and continuity."
