I didn’t come into this world to spend my life replying messages.

That sentence has become one of the healthiest reminders I give myself.

For a long time, I felt guilty whenever I couldn’t respond immediately to an email, DM, WhatsApp message even responding immediately to missed calls until I realised something that changed the way I work and live.

I know being responsive is important but it is not my life’s assignment and I don’t need to have anxiety over it.

I wasn’t created just to manage communication, I was created to build, create, to think, lead and Ofcourse to SERVE and all of those things require uninterrupted time.

We’ve normalised constant availability.

We’ve made people feel guilty for protecting their attention.

We’ve mistaken accessibility for effectiveness.

For me every “yes” to constant interruptions is often a “no” to deep work.

As I’ve grown, I’ve had to learn that protecting my attention isn’t selfish, It’s stewardship.

So if I don’t reply immediately, please don’t assume I don’t care.

Sometimes I’m creating.

Sometimes I’m thinking.

Sometimes I’m resting because I cannot continually pour into others if I never make time to be refilled myself.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in leadership is this:

You don’t serve people best by always being available.

You serve them best by remaining healthy enough to keep showing up.

Protect your attention.

Protect your peace.

Protect your assignment.

The world doesn’t only need your responses.

It needs what you were created to build.

When you work this close to political power, you have to understand that your words can travel much further than you intended.

Having a political opinion is one thing, using your platform carelessly is another.

Discretion is not silence, It is knowing when your voice adds value and when it simply creates unnecessary exposure.

Enough is enough 😡

I came across a tweet today describing Executive Assistants as “glorified office maids.” What disturbed me even more was seeing how many people agreed and I couldn’t scroll past it not because there is anything beneath doing administrative, personal or operational tasks, there isn’t. There is dignity in service and in every honest job but reducing Executive Assistance to “running errands” completely misunderstands the profession.

A great Executive Assistant literally functions as his/her principals shadow, manages information, protects confidentiality, anticipates needs, coordinates people and priorities, manages communication, solves problems and often serves as the operational bridge between an executive and the people around them.

Now here’s the irony: when an EA is exceptionally good at their job, their work looks effortless.

You see the meeting happen but you don’t see the moving parts.

You see the executive arrive prepared, you don’t see the work behind it.

You see everything running smoothly, you don’t see the judgment, discretion, emotional intelligence and competence required to make it happen.

Service is not servitude!!!

Being willing to serve does not make a professional less intelligent, capable or valuable.

There is also nothing wrong with an EA handling personal or administrative tasks when those responsibilities are part of the role. The problem is reducing an entire profession to those tasks and using them to diminish the people who do the work.

This is why professionalising Executive Assistance matters.

This is why we built the School of Service @schoolofservice_ because Executive Service is a profession and it deserves to be understood, respected and developed as one.
