This is a very personal work about me, my mum and Photography and Memory.

It has been suggested that photographs do not simply preserve memories, but gradually replace them - that, over time, the photograph becomes the memory itself.
This work turns that around, asking: if the photograph disappears, does the memory return?

The image is a photograph of me, taken by my mother when I was twenty. She was forty. She has since died.
I remember almost nothing of that day. I can’t remember what happened five minutes before or after the photograph was made. All I have left is a single moment: my mother saying, “Stand there, I’ll take your picture,” and the intimacy of her pressing the shutter.

The photograph has been printed as a salt print and toned with gold, but it has deliberately not been fixed. Each time the album is opened and light falls on the print, the image changes. The highlights will slowly darken, the contrast diminish, and the photograph will gradually become unreadable.

No single viewer is likely to notice the transformation while looking. Yet every act of viewing contributes to the image’s disappearance. By the end of the exhibition, the image will no longer exist.

If photographs become our memories, what happens when the photograph itself is allowed to vanish?
Once the image is gone, will I have, once again, a whole day spent with my mum?

Dis Manibus - a pagan dedication to the spirits of the dead

Hazelwood Marshes was once a freshwater grazing marsh. Following the failure of its sea defences, the site has been transformed into salt marsh, profoundly changing the habitat of the plants and wildlife.

These photographs of the skeletal trees are salt prints, an early photographic printing processes.  Here created with seawater from the estuary, thus the salt water that transformed the landscape also creates its image.

The prints form part of my continuing exploration of how photographic materials and processes can be integral to the representation of place.

Three images of Hazelwood Marshes will be shown as part of Edge Land, opening this weekend at the Long Shop Museum, Leiston.

Meet our next set of Duality artists 🎉

Angus Stewart is an east coast-based English artist whose practice explores relationships between people, landscape & ecology through photopolymer photogravure & alternative photographic processes. He has an MA in Photojournalism & Documentary Photography from London College of Communication, UAL, & is a UNESCO Climate Academy winner.

Joanna Turland is a contemporary painter based in Norwich and a graduate of Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London. Working in oil, she creates richly layered symbolic paintings that explore myth, folklore, esoteric imagery & personal narratives through an intuitive, surreal visual language.

Philippa Champain is a Norwich-based artist working across abstract sculpture and printmaking. She has a Masters from NUA and has exhibited widely, both locally & in London. Her recent work explores the tension between beauty & ugliness and the deep sense of unease when something doesn’t look quite as it should.

Mark Tillie is a Norwich based photographer whose cinematic images of landscape, nature & everyday life are informed by a past career as a film stills photographer. His early editorial portraits are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.

Retired from the NHS, Lo_Mu is living her dream; creating art fulltime from her Norwich studio.Lo_Mu draws on the world, using personal & universal images, focusing on expression, not literal representations by shapeshifting & juxtaposing imagery.

Garry Hobbs is inspired by pop culture, characters & random juxtapositions, coincidences, & bizarre little moments that come together creating tableaux vivants, living silent theatrical pictures. Challenging the audience to consider, to reflect & to find their own meaning, he challenges people’s perception of what 'depiction' is about.

Melinda Thompson lives in London. Her current practice is concerned with intersubjectivity & the latent state of objects & places as potential metaphors, examining concealment, incongruity and temporality through themes of ritual, heritage, identity & otherness.Melinda’s photography is achieved using minimal digital intervention with no photoshop or AI. by @gustaphus

Is ‘horses’ a real word?

Do you ever find that the more you look at a word the less confident you are that it’s real?

Semantic satiation occurs when repeatedly saying or reading a word causes the word to lose connection to its meaning, leaving you with a meaningless string of sounds or letters.

After a long day printing I am not even sure if ‘horses’ are real any more.

I will be open for @suffolkopenstudios this Sat & Sun, 6 & 7th June from 11 - 5

I will be demonstrating printing both days and happy to answer any questions you have about the process.

Yoxford is a busy arts venue this weekend with @betty.pepper and @nancymain.ceramics opening their studios and the @yoxfordarts collective exhibiting in the Village Hall… and don’t forget @roweandwilliams and @bettycharlesart

Japanese temple gardens.

A few years I visited Japan, where I stayed in a monastery, a beautiful quiet building of dark wood. Each morning we would go to the temple which was reached via a corridor that ran alongside the internal gardens, in a European monastery this would be called a cloister, I do not know the Japanese word for the walkway, but the gardens is called, I think, nihon teien, they are designed to aid meditation and contemplation.

One day while late for temple I stopped along the way and spent time in the gardens.

This handmade print is available on my website.
