Yesterday at the pediatric residency graduation ceremony, I had the honor of receiving the Best Teacher Award in Pediatric Subspecialty from our residents.
Teaching has always been the part that gives me back more than it takes. I don’t aspire to have trainees remember every lecture slide, guideline or board pearl. I hope they remember feeling supported when they doubted themselves, being challenged to think critically, being given room to ask questions without fear and knowing someone genuinely believed in their potential before they fully believed in themselves.Moments like this are deeply humbling because they serve as a reminder that our impact is often measured not by publications, titles or accolades but by the people we invest in.
To our residents: thank you for trusting me with your questions, your uncertainty, your curiosity and your growth. You challenge me to continue learning, to become a better physician, and to show up each day with purpose. This award will hold a special place in my heart because it comes from the very people who make teaching such a privilege. One of my favorite moments at PIONEER 2026 was reconnecting with my former Chair from @brownu and co-moderating a session. There’s something special about crossing paths again years later,not just as a trainee but as a colleague contributing to the same field. It also reminded me of something I have come to appreciate more and more about mentorship, that growth can be uncomfortable at times and you may not have a clear picture of where you are heading but as long as you keep going and give your best, ultimately you’ll arrive at your destination. Grateful to have served on the planning committee for PIONEER 2026 intestinal rehabilitation symposium under the leadership of Dr. Ajay Jain alongside other experts in the field.From thought-provoking conversations to new collaborations, mentorship and realizing just how much there still is to learn, this meeting was a beautiful reminder of why we do this work. And hearing Eugene Kranz speak about leadership, teamwork and perseverance was an unforgettable reminder that extraordinary things rarely happen because of one person. They happen because people come together, trust one another and keep moving forward even when the path isn’t easy. A true honor to have Eugene Kranz, legendary NASA Flight Director, who led Mission Control for Apollo 11 (supporting Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during humanity’s first moon landing) as a keynote speaker at PIONEER 2026. “Pioneering” isn’t just about being first, it’s about being better. Gene brought this powerful philosophy to PIONEER 2026, drawing parallels between groundbreaking space missions and the innovative approaches we are developing in pediatric intestinal rehabilitation. His message: the same discipline, teamwork and courage that sent humans to the moon can revolutionize how we care for children with intestinal failure. His insights on leadership, critical decision-making, and maintaining focus under pressure resonated powerfully with our community.
