I’ve loved @katemustsew ‘s work for some time. And I’m so glad I went to one of her ‘Scrap Roll Up’ online classes, expertly hosted, as always, by @craftymonkies .

Work is a real bind at the moment, plus the stuff going on in my family life - it was a total tonic to learn something new and different and sew at the same time. And the rest of the day had been great too - tiptop hair cut by @lesleymcintyresalon , West London (💰🙄 ) errands run, totally random coffee meet with @gavinpykerman at ‘Hackney’s Vintage Bus Festival’.( ¿¡ who knew ?! ) What’s the line about a change is good as rest? Yeah, that. Only slightly shadowed by my iron dying 40 minutes out from the class - when I’d been in a department store 4 hours earlier probably overflowing with new irons. And breath, Guy. But I did also learn that I do not have the fucking patience to vertically steam 2”x10” scraps. New iron ordered.

So my vague 2026 intention to move things out of my Work In Progress pile (love me some WIP at the half-year mark 😜) and use fabric I already own - takes a slightly different, but welcome, turn.

Thank you Kate and Rachel for a great class and a lovely afternoon. I cannot recommend your work highly enough. x

Now that Anjum - @anj_mahal - has finally made an honest man of Trevor - @heinzkloss - I can post some images of “Atomic Wedding Starburst Marriage”, my gift to them marking a fabulous wedding and a fantastic couple.

I thought they'd like something with Mid-Century Modern vibes, so chose Violet Craft's pattern #atomicstarburstquilt and I drew colour inspiration from one of Justine Ellis’ screen prints that #AnjAndTrev own. Unintentionally, the majority of fabric I picked was designed by Brigitte Heitland / Zen Chic Studios from 3 different collections - that not only gave me the colours I wanted but also the patterns that continued with the nuclear age feel.

And I know I shouldn’t use posts like this to blow my own trumpet, but I’m really pleased with the combo of the diamond patchwork overlaid perpendicularly (?) with a nested diamond quilting pattern from Jacquie Gering.

“Embroidery Bouquet On Granite”

Finished in June (started August ‘23), but only recently photographed - largely because I couldn’t face a crack-of-dawn start to avoid the #LondonFields weekend hoards in this weather.

I’m really pleased with it and my work. But real skill is the pattern designer at Tilda’s World who came up with the idea, pattern & instructions. My bit - patchwork by numbers, quilting, binding, definitely has some hard-won technical skill - but the real creativity is the, almost certainly, (anonymous?) woman who designed it.

I’ve put a proper hanging sleeve on the reverse - and it measures ~160 cm x 207 cm (63” x 81”) and, oddly, the binding and sleeve took me an absolute age. Probably striving for perfection and finding it hard going, for a job I usually enjoy. Pattern matched the reverse - also Tilda fabric from the #ChicEscape range, in the design #WildGarden in teal and pink. I’m not sure how well my photos have captured the texture of the quilting - which I LOVE - but combined with the fabric, it puts me in mind of eiderdowns from my childhood & grandparents’ homes.

However, I am now faced with a dilemma. I don’t want it to be a bed or back-of-the-sofa-quilt. But I don’t really have anywhere to hang or display it in my tiny, cluttered home. So not sure what will happen to it next. Though because its weight and texture is gorgeous (😏) I’m happy to move it from place to place and just stroke it, for the time being.

I’ve tagged #HolliesHaberdashery because I bought the complete #TildaSolids range from them, #EmpressMills and #JustSewnow because - though I've lost track of where the backing/binding is from - they are likely candidates. And #janomeuk & #homeofsewing because I started this on my little Brother machine but pieced 8 of 9 panels and all the quilting on my #Janome #8200QCP (💓) bought in Sept ’23

These days, it’s the layering of a quilt that I find such a ball ache. And I think this is the biggest to date - 90” square (228 cm).

And that’s about the size of the floor space in my living room, with most of the furniture pushed out of the way.

I’ve had near disasters working at this type of size in the past. But this went surprisingly well. Fortunately, wasn’t as hot this morning, though it did take absolute hours.

And only one rather lovely, rather large #LSAInternational vase got totally smashed.

Not sure how much my middle aged knees can carry on doing this - layering quilts and picking up smashed vases 😢.

But a properly good day 🎉. And now, having altered my approach, I know I really can layer a 90" quilt at home. Of which I have many in my WIP pile ⚖️.

#TangledInDevonWithDucks

A house warming present for a friend who I visited in Devon a week or two ago. I thought she'd relocated recently - like 9 months ago - but it was actually over two years! Where is my life going?

Because it's a gift I'm going light on the critique. There are four different phases of quilting. A serpentine wave over the main 'tangled' piecing; another one around the inner border; diagonal lines over the 'piano key' border; and a knot shape mirroring the tangled piecing in the 4 'cornerstones'. It's a long time since I've attempted something like that - instead opting for safer (and quicker) all over patterns. Because it increases the time it takes exponentially: rather than 2 rotations it was something like 18 (probably more - the knots were super fiddly). And because the quilting lines finish in the middle of the quilt, each line has to be manually finished - a process known as 'burying your threads'. Never say never, but it'll be a while before I do it again.

But for this friend: anything x.

So my life is being spent making quilts 🪡. Some of which have ducks 🦆.

Pattern by @stuarthillardmakes and fabric from my stash but the piecing is all @tilda_uk scrap packs and solids (background is Night Blue, binding is - I think - Cornflower (the colour of my eyes - IYKYK!)) the backing is 'Frankie' by Basic Grey for Moda.

I have another of these in purple and grey in my WIP stack. One day.

A little bit of hand sewing - #EPP for those in the know - on the train down to the Dorset / Devon border.

NB: this image may have been restaged for lighting, composition, elbow room and a really rattly old train!

One of the lovely parts that goes with sewing is the abundance of independent retailers and small shops you get to patronise on the hunt for lovely fabric and delightful haberdashery - so often run by women who are makers too. I know retail is never easy - especially now - so tagging in @wildcornflowerstudio (needle minder + scissor fob) and @beyond_measure_uk (leather thimble, beeswax in its tin) as a way of saying thank you for your work.

Always nerve wracking cutting into some beloved fabric. But I've had this Tilda 🦚 #ChicEscape calling to me for yonks to use in a pattern that shows off feature fabrics. So here goes... ✂️🎡🪒

One hundred and one other things on my mind, my plate and my to do list. But this is easily the most appealing. And distracting.

#DiamondStarsTwice

It only feels like a couple of months ago, that I was moaning that a friend had their 50th birthday. Now, one of the buggers has only gone and turned 60. (different friend (obvs))

So - diamonds for his 60th anniversary, twice because there are 30 diamond star blocks in the quilt; and monochrome on the front, blue on the back because he is red-green colour blind and thought, consequently, it would look good for him.

Started on the first day of the new year, and really pleased I've got it done in six weeks, considering I lost two weekends in January to a nasty bout of flu.

And tagging @a_beautiful_thing_uk because Jo sold me the #GiucyGuice Fizz fabric - which makes up the white and black background and two of the foreground stars too.

And @ AG - if any of this is TMI - sorry and I'll edit/take it down. x.
