On an adventure to AlUla where I filmed an episode of @guyintheskyshow, I discovered and ancient tombs of the Nabataeans. 2000 years of history, locked into the rocks.
It’s fascinating how we have so much evidence of their places after death but limited places that show how they lived at the time. I guess the same could be said for many ancient civilizations like the Pharaohs of Egypt.
What we do know, is these were trade routes for the incense trail, starting in Yemen and Oman and trading up to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq).
The stories have passed down through the generations and now told by modern day Rawis (storytellers).
The arab world is home to the most stories than just about anywhere.

Born in the countryside, helping out on the farm brings back memories. This time, learning how the Polish have kept their 200yr old tradition for making a smoked sheep’s cheese.
I helped out with milking the sheep 🐑, but seem to have lost my touch. Instead he crapped in my milk bucket.

The island of Gozo, the northern Island of Malta is the quieter but beautiful island of the archipelago. Among these caves are whispers of legends that go back millennia.
It is thought the St Paul, the predominant writer of the Christian Bible, landed among these islands.
It wouldn’t have been such a crazy thing, after all the Phoenicians (from Lebanon) had been coming to these islands for thousands of years before. We were lucky enough to talk to an archaeologist who excavated a 4,700 yr old Phoenician shipwreck.
But the archaeological evidence of St Paul is yet to be found so remains a myth. But a good story nonetheless.
We came here to film @guyintheskyshow with @blazingsandstudios with thanks to @visitmalta.

Chasing history from above in Khaybar.
Filming this episode of @guyintheskyshow took me deep into Saudi Arabia’s northwest, where an oasis of black volcanic rock and date palms has been quietly guarding thousands of years of history.
Long before it became famous as the site of the 7th-century Battle of Khaybar, this place was a thriving walled oasis — recent archaeology here has uncovered fortifications dating back over 4,000 years, making it one of the oldest known walled settlements in Arabia. Its name is thought to come from an ancient word for “fortress,” and you can see why: the basalt outcrops around the oasis were once crowned with stone qusur (fortresses) built to protect the springs and palm groves below.
For centuries Khaybar was a farming stronghold, home to Jewish agricultural tribes who turned the harsh volcanic terrain (a harrat) into one of Arabia’s richest oases before it entered the historical record as a turning point in early Islamic history. Flying over it, you can still trace the old fort ruins against the lava fields — a landscape that’s been fought over, farmed, and fortified since the Bronze Age.
Huge privilege to tell this story for Guy in the Sky.

The capital of the biggest kingdom in Europe for over 500 years. Yet the whole country disappeared for 123 years. It just goes to show how nothing is guaranteed and unless we have the resilience, the will and the perseverance to make it happen.

Glass blowing has been around since the Phoenicians were trading across the Mediterranean — and one of their favourite stops was Malta.

Malta is unlike anywhere else. Every empire that ever set sail on this sea left something behind. The Romans. The Arabs. The Ottomans. The British. Most famously, the Knights Hospitaller. Layer upon layer of culture baked into one tiny island.

The glass you mass-produce comes out of factories. The glass you want — the piece that sits on your mantelpiece and starts a conversation — is made by hand. Like this, at @mdinaglass.

Documenting @guyintheskyshow has taken me into a lot of local crafts over the years. This one hit differently.

Floating above 2,000 years of silence

There are moments in life that stop you cold — not because of the adrenaline, but because of the weight of what you’re looking down at.

Drifting in a hot air balloon above Hegra at sunrise, the desert stretched out beneath me in every direction, and carved into the rose-red sandstone below were the tombs of the Nabataeans — a civilisation so extraordinary, so quietly powerful, that the world is only just beginning to wake up to their story.

These were the masters of the ancient incense trade. At a time when frankincense and myrrh were worth more than gold, the Nabataeans controlled the routes that connected Arabia to Rome, Egypt to Mesopotamia. Camel caravans thousands strong moved through this landscape carrying the scents of gods and kings. Hegra — known to them as Hegra, to the Romans as Hegra Arabia — was one of their greatest cities. And yet, for centuries, it slept beneath the sand, largely forgotten.

From 300 metres up, you understand why they chose this place. The silence. The scale. The sense that the land itself is sacred.

This was filmed as part of my adventure travel TV show @guyintheskyshow — and I can honestly say, after every continent and every ocean, this morning ranked among the most humbling of my life.

350 metres below the surface in the city of Katowice in Poland, is a whole other world.

The air smells of coal and sulphur. The tunnels are a claustrophobia nightmare. And somewhere beneath the surface, a network of 5 kilometres of darkness.

This wasn’t a tourist visit but an adventure. They put me to work — hacking coal from the rock face and sawing timber beams to stop the tunnels from caving in around us.

The men who spent their lives down here didn’t do it for the adventure. They did it because someone had to. For me at least, it was a lot of fun.

An island. No fresh water. Just sea in every direction.

The only solution? Carved deep underground — a hidden network of cisterns and tunnels that kept an entire civilisation alive.

I went exploring beneath Malta with an expert in these ancient waterways. And what he told me stopped me in my tracks.

People were living on this island 8,000 years ago.

Before the pyramids. Before Stonehenge. Before almost everything we think of as “ancient.”

How the hell did they even get here?

The trees in the Tatra Mountains don’t give up their secrets easily — but ask them nicely, and they’ll tell you stories of outlaws, hidden treasure, and a people who refused to be broken.

These peaks were the hunting ground of Juraj Janosik — the original Robin Hood. He robbed the wealthy nobility and vanished into these mountains like smoke. Standing up here, you understand why. This is not a landscape that welcomes strangers.

The same rugged terrain that sheltered Janosik’s crew later sheltered Polish resistance fighters during WWII. The Tatras didn’t just hide people — they protected them.

I came here filming an episode of @guyintheskyshow with @blazingsandstudios, and honestly? The rock face nearly had the last laugh. Sleeping in a hanging tent, 200m from the ground, just make sure you don’t go sleep walking for the toilet.

Valletta’s harbour is one of the most breathtaking views on earth. But dive beneath the surface and you enter a different world entirely.

These waters hide a brutal history.

During WWII, this harbour was home to the British naval and submarine fleet — making it the single most bombed location in the entire war. The Nazis came here relentlessly. And the reason? Malta sat at the crossroads of everything. The Suez Canal. The Strait of Gibraltar. And Hitler’s African ambitions ran straight through it.

I pulled on my scuba gear and went down to find the wreckage.

Shipwrecks from that era rest silently on the seabed — bomb damage still visible across twisted steel. An underwater graveyard for the men of the British Navy. Stories of sacrifice hidden just metres below one of the most beautiful harbours in the world.

History doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes you have to dive for it.

The chopper awaits to take us over Harrat Khaybar, a series of ancient volcanoes in the Medinah area of Saudi Arabia. They gave life to civilizations many thousands of years ago that left their trace with kites and petroglyphs that give some indication of life so long ago.
