The Rijksakademie and Art Rotterdam @art_rotterdam are collaborating for the upcoming edition of the art fair, which will take place from 27 to 29 March.

As part of this collaboration, Rijksakademie will participate in the fair’s Talks Programme, ‘Reflections’, which features a series of artist talks, Q&As and lectures on current topics, presented by artists, curators, museum directors and other experts from the artistic field. The Rijksakademie will contribute two talks to the programme:

Friday 27 March
14.00–14.30
Laurence Rassel and Guy Woueté
Artist Guy Woueté engages in conversation with Laurence Rassel, the newly appointed director of the Rijksakademie, about working within hybrid institutions across disciplines and continents. Woueté was a resident at the Rijksakademie (2009–2010) and later an advisor. They previously worked together at erg (école de recherche graphique) in Brussels, where Rassel was director for ten years and Woueté is currently teaching. A thoughtful dialogue on the importance of artistic development and international exchange.

Saturday 28 March
14.00–14.30
Marieke Zwart and Dineke Blom
Artist and Rijksakademie alum Marieke Zwart (1987, Nijmegen) and artist Dineke Blom (1952, Paramaribo) engage in conversation about Zwart’s new book ‘she saw i saw’, which explores the visibility of maternity care in the Bijlmermeer neighbourhood. They discuss the search for balance between distance and proximity – on paper and beyond. How does social practice relate to artistic considerations? The conversation will be moderated by Evita de Roode.

Please note, this talk will be held in Dutch.
Next to this, our collaboration includes participation in the VIP Programme, and a special Rijksakademie-at-the-fair map that highlights all participating Rijksakademie artists.

WAKA Cinema is a meeting place for artists, researchers and the public. It establishes connections between local and global histories and raises questions about power, migration, racism, capitalism and resistance. In this way, film is not seen merely as an art form, but as a way to come together, share knowledge and strengthen communities.
In the summer, WAKA Cinema took place in Njombe-Penja (Cameroon), and now Guy Woueté & his colleagues from Waka Studio are bringing this programme to Aalst.

🎬 Yves Roland Yeungap, J’Accuse, 2017
A posthumous film pamphlet, balancing between apocalyptic prophecy and political action.

🎬 Jozef Devillé & Pablo Eekman, Paradigma, 2024
Composed exclusively of archive footage, Paradigma reveals that the problems we face today are not new.

🎬 Lionel Maock, J’ai trouvé l’amour, 2025
A documentary that immerses the viewer in the lives of the inhabitants of a village in Haute-Sanaga, in the Central Region of Cameroon.

📆 21.11.2025 17:00—20:00
📍 NW, Houtkaai 15, 9300 Aalst

📣 19:00 Kitchen Stories diner

ARTIST TALK | FRONT ROW with Guy Woueté (@guywouete)

Join us for this month’s FRONT ROW with Guy Woueté, an artist working between Antwerp, Douala and Penja. His multidisciplinary practice — spanning drawing, sculpture, installation, video, photography, performance, and publications — engages with social criticism and activism, questioning different forms of protest and resistance.

In this talk, Woueté will examine how context shapes the notion of ‘the artist’ and ‘the art practice’, which he argues remains dominated by the Western canon and worldview. Positioned between Belgium and Cameroon, he critically observes how new forms of colonialism continue to reproduce Western perspectives in contemporary art and politics.

Be part of the discussion and enjoy a complimentary drink on us!

📍 M HKA auditorium
📆 Thursday 24.04, 19:00 - 20:30 | Free admission

FRONT ROW is co-organised by M HKA and the artist-run platform NICC (@artists_nicc) through a shared basis in supporting artists, nurturing international perspectives, and being generators of discussion.

Reflecting on Publiek Park 2023 in Antwerp — Coming this summer to Brussels and Meise!

Looking back at a wonderful second edition in Harmonie Park, Albert Park, and Provincietuin - Antwerp - by presenting the artworks of the exhibition. For Publiek Park, the artist Guy Woueté created Words of Diversity - a thought-provoking installation that spans various locations within Harmonie Park, Koning Albert Park, and the Garden of the Provinciehuis.

Woueté’s Words of Diversity consists of performative sculptures made of four banners, three of which are connected to two grocery shopping carts. These carts, one filled with empty cans and the other holding (take-away) protest banners, allude to protest signs and reference various societal issues. Through this work, Woueté explores the intersections between park accessibility, economic paradigms, and possible futures, drawing attention to how everyday objects can reflect deeper systemic injustices.

Employing the visual language of social justice movements and the commercialization of protest, Woueté's work invites viewers to contemplate the lingering effects of structural inequality. A performance by the artist took place on the opening day of Publiek Park, and the work was further activated on Saturdays, September 16 & 23, between 16:00 and 18:00.

Guy Woueté (1980, CM/BE) is an artist living and working in Antwerp, Douala, and Penja. His artistic practice spans various media, including drawing, sculpture, installations, video, performance, and publications. Woueté’s work critically examines the influence of Western powers on political developments in Africa, highlighting the enduring and harmful consequences of these interventions. Themes such as colonialism, racism, capitalism, migration, and symbols of dominance are central to his practice. His art crosses into social criticism and activism, employing and interrogating various forms of protest as a means of expression.
